Can anyone tell me why the coil would get hot?
This is happening when the battery is connected but the engine is not running - have I got the wiring wrong?

Sounds like you have a live feed to the coil all the time. Check it with a test lamp or volt meter.

As pete says the coil will get hot if the points are closed and you have a 12 volt supply, did you leave the ignition switched on with the engine stalled??, that will get the coil hot and will eventually burn it out if left too long.
