i have removed the castle nut and pin but the hub wont come off on one of the rear brakes, should it just pull off ? need help :(

make sure you have backed off brake adjusters, will it move at all on half shaft splines ,pos siezed/rusted,tap end off shaft ,put nut on first to protect thread ,copper hammer and see if it moves at all.when you put it back grease splines.

its a 1970 early bay , what are backed off break adjusters and were are they located please ?

the brake shoe adjusters are accesed throgh hole in brake drum ,star wheel you turn, prob siezed, wide 5 one piece drums :?:

you're right in your thinking, once the hub nuts are off and the brake shoes are backed off (other wise they'll be holding onto the drums) the theory is that they 'pull' off. I have had to tap them off in the past using a sturdy screw driver and tapping it off from the rear face/edge of the drum, working my way round the drum.
p.s. when I say 'tapping' that could be interpretted as 'a good flippin clout' as needed ;-)

If it rusted on try heating the center area of the drum, dont get it too hot, this some time helps brake the seal, and give it a few good sharp taps around the center. If all else fails get a hub puller.

thanks for the tips i got it off in the end through the spare hole in the drum and the stars turned fine :D altho it now looks like there has been brake fluid leaking from the cyclinder perhaps because the back plate in covered in it., could there be another cause for this ? also the brake drum has a slight lip on the outer edge ( must be from where the brake shoes have worn it away ) will the drums need replacing or can i get away with it :?

Well done Steve! regarding the leaking brake fluid - probably the seals gone on the brake cylinder - for the price of them, chuck em and renew! but.... check your shoes/brake linings,if leaking fluid has contaminated them then its new shoes as well. the lip depends on how great it is,you're quite right, its only where the shoe meets the drum that will wear, maybe someone else could hazard a guess at what is the acceptable amount of drum wear.........?

I think wear limit on wide 5 drums is 251mm, new 250mm, the problem you will have if the drum is worn out of limit is the diameter of the pads will differ, you can have the pads shaped to the drum diameter or just wait for them to wear in. Not the best solution as the contact area will be smaller than intended, but the cheapest

i intend to have the bus for a while so its probs worth replacing the hubs aswell , 42 pounds each at GSF , ouch :( cheers for the help

If your going to do that, its worth taking the drive shafts off, stripping and cleaning the cv joints and re-greasing.
just remember only strip one cv at a time the bearing are sized as a set so you dont want to get sets mixed up.
