Yeah the DVLA check imports just to make sure everything is legit. All they do is look at the chassis number, mot, import papers, dating letter etc
Although it seems to vary from office to office on the number of inspections they do :?:

Having a speedo that reads 000000.0 means that it's officially a brand new van - well done!!!
;)

I'll be the first registered owner on the V5 too
I checked with my MOT inspector if it was alright to zero the clock, and he said it was ok because it was a replacement part. Lucky because it was quicker to wind it on to zero than to match the mileage on my old speedo! Also will make it easier for me to remember oil changes/services on the rebuilt engine.

Looks like I'll have to have the engine out to cure the clutch, going to fit a shiney new carb (just a cheapo one from GSF to act as a stop gap until I can afford some 34 icts) at the same time as I need to give back the carb I've loaned from the boss!

Nice one Dude, great to see it moving

My inspection was a bloody costly pain in the arse - I had to get it trailered there because you're not mean't to drive it until it's got a UK plate. The inspection took about 30 nano seconds & then you have to trailer it back and wait for the V948 form so you can get plates made up.

All in all about 3 day's from start to finish, but £100 for moving it, £55 registration, £30 plates

Don't think you'll be having the same moving problem :)

& It's all worth it when you get that one year tax disc with no fee 8)

Well the boss has a recovery truck and trade plates both of which I'm insured on, so getting the van there isn't really a problem, although he'll probably take it himself as he's registered all the vans that have come through the workshop in the past few years.

The inspection does seem like a bit of a joke though, more of a paper work exercise than anything else. We had quite a good set up until recently as the dvla guy doing the inspections was into his dubs so was more interested in having a look round the vans to see the work we've done

Apparently if you talk nicely to them they will give you the right chit to go and get plates made up on the day, not that you need it for black and silvers anyway.

Nothing better than not handing yet more money over to the government though!

Sorted the clutch tonight..
28072008001.jpg

The problem was
1) The friction plate was kippered and nearly down to the rivets
2) It was a 180mm Beetle clutch as my case is a AR Code (1300 twin hot spot, but had new 1600 heads,b+p's)
3) The early bay release bearing doesn't work with later style clutches

Just wished I'd thought about all of this before slinging the engine in months ago

All ready to go to the DVLA tomorrow anyway :)

Nice work chap 8) good luck with the DVLA 8)

Well the good news....
29072008.jpg

The bad news is MFE appears to stand for "Mother F*cking Engine" And on the way back.....
29072008001.jpg

29072008002.jpg

Due to a number of unfortunate events I now have some melted HT leads and an engine with a rattle that sounds like a knackered crank
29072008003.jpg

So road legal, but off the road.

Nice one for getting it on the road but what happened to the engine?

Well, I forgot to plug up the air outputs on the fan housing(had the engine out the night before the inspection after work and my back was killing me so shoved the engine back in and got home asap), the oil light decided to pack up, and the fact its new heads, b+ps didn't help so it cooked itself basically and the first sign of trouble was when it cut out.

its a good excuse to build a bigger lump
Can't go bigger cause I'm only 20 so will get shafted on insurance. Also don't want it to be too thirsty as it'll be my daily. Think I'm going to put a engle 110 in whilst the case is split ready for when I can afford some 34 icts.

Back from France so started to sort the van out..

The death rattle..

So once again we're playing the engine hokey cokey..
22082008.jpg

This isn't a healthy sight...
22082008002.jpg

Think this may just be the last bits of the old bakerlite fuel pump stand that snapped off in the case
22082008003.jpg

Tore it down to a long block
22082008001.jpg

23082008011.jpg

Got my front bumper in primer
23082008010.jpg

Started work on the drop gates, went and got some hinges
23082008003.jpg

Which I have started to modify with the old hinges so they will fit..
23082008002.jpg

23082008005.jpg

Got some stuff from the autojumble...
25082008001.jpg

Got some rubber to protect the treasure chest floor and to stop stuff rattling..
25082008.jpg

And promptly filled it back up...
25082008005.jpg

More engine bits waiting to go back on, got a chavtastic tax disc holder and gear sick gaiter..
25082008003.jpg

Did a quick spray job on the front bumper

Nice pick up, is has some kind of Hot Rod feel to it.
Sorry to hear you boiled the engine now that it is roadworthy.

Are you gonna drop the bus?

Cheers dude, yeah that was the look I was aiming for. It will be getting lowered at some point when I can afford it, along with white walls, stainless bumpers etc etc
It's all planned out, I just haven't got the money to do it!

Today I've been sound proofing and starting to install the sound system.
As dynamat is a bit of a ripoff I've gone for the budget option!

To start with stuck flash band to all the panels (need to go and get some more to finish the roof and front panel)

30082008001.jpg

Then wanged on some thermawrap..
30082008005.jpg

Under the watchful eye of project manager
30082008003.jpg

Doors now shut with a satisfying clunk
30082008004.jpg

Dug out my sound system which I took out my old GT Beetle before I sold it...

Installed the Infinitys in the doors, I plan to hide them with the door cards
30082008006.jpg

Hopefully will be able to hide the Fusion 6x9s behind the seats
30082008008.jpg

And there is no chance of getting this in the cab, but I'll wire it in and see how it sounds in the treasure chest. If it doesn't sound right in there I'll probably get another sub and amp and install them in the spare wheel well under the cab seats
30082008009.jpg

Got a Fusion headunit off a mate to replace my old alpine that died. Ran the aux lead from the back of the head unit into the glove box
30082008007.jpg

Got a remote for it as well which will be handy when camping. Wanged a load of stickers over the gash looking ashtray as well.
