Hi all, picked my new bus up yesterday and it won't tick over, smells rich too to me.
Normal running it pulls very well but won't have it at idle. Had to wind the throttle stop right in to get it to tick over.
Any ideas where to start?
I'll post up some pics of the carb later. I'm not familiar with it so some advice as to where the mixture screws etc are would be appreciated. ;)

Theres a website with good stuff on re setting up a vw carb, cant find it just now.

However before fiddling with the carb I'd also check, plugs, points, timing, valve clearance etc, then set the carb.

Hiya street,

You have a 30/31PICT sitting atop a twin port. You should be running a 34PICT3 on that twinport. But the 30/31PICT will do a satisfactory job although your gas mileage and power will probably not be as good as with the 34PICT3.

I'm guessing (probably a good guess) from the outside condition of the carb that it is pretty filthy inside also. Take a look down the throat of the carb. Look all dirty and grungy? Probably time to clean and rekit the carb.

Follow that with the set-up advice on Rob & Dave's website and you'll idle nicely.

before you do any of that... check the fuel cut off solenoid. this only affects idle.

with your ignition on, unplug the red wire going to the lower left of the carb and connect it again. does it click. if not check the red wire has voltage.
if it has then you need a new solenoid (as a quick fix, unscrew the solenoid cut off the plunger with wire cutters and screw back in).

Thanks for your replies :)
I first though it could be the soliniod or possibly an air leak. I'll check today Wilgartw.
Barring the idle it runs fine, no flat spots. Just won't tick over. Even with the throttle screwed in it seems to increase and decrease in revs, uneven.
Another carb added to my shopping list, its mounting up ;)

Yeah its not positioned all that clever. I will get round to all the little jobs. looks like the idle valve as it is deffo not clicking. Popped round to C&C to see Justin (handy having him live next door) ;) but sadly he can't get one till Monday I'll be in Cornwall from tomorrow.
At least I think I know what it is.

I took the idle valve out and the pin was inside the housing? a few taps and it popped out and will fall back in again? When its out and I earth it and connect the feed it clicks and moves in. if I take the feed off and back on it does nothing. is this normal?

i presume you are taking the feed on and off when it is earthed, and the feed is definately live.. if so that is not normal.

just cut the plunger off. the only thing it does is ensures the engine does not overrun for a couple of seconds when you switch the engine off.

I don't know much about carb setup, But if i were you, i'd move the fuel filter from above the HT leads.

On this type of carb, you musn't wind in the throttle screw, back it out until its just able to nip a bit of paper between the screw and the choke cam (when the choke is fully warmed up). Next on the left side you can see a large screw and a smaller screw close to each other in the housing. The larger is the air bypass and controls idle speed, the smaller screw next to it is the mixture.

So wind the air bypass in or out to set the idle in the region of 850rpm, then carefully adjust the mixture screw, wind out first and listen to the idle speed once you are to a point where the idle doesnt change begin to wind back in until it starts to drop and just bring it back out a tad, then re-adjust the bypass screw to get the 850rpm again. The site you were given explains it very well.

Back from my hols Friday and two days to play with my new bus! :D

Sorted all the lights to UK spec, sorted the horn and got the washers working for the Mot. Just seatbelts to sort out now(more of this later)

Having finished that little lot I had a play with the engine and carb. Thanks to the advice on here I now have her ticking over nicely :D The timing was good, but no matter what I tried to do with the carb I could not get it to idle without cutting out. It seems to have picked up a bit of sh*t in the idle jet. A good clean up and blow through and everything fell into place. :D
I just need to let it cool right down and make sure the choke is working properly on the cam steps.

Back to seatbelts if I may, what is the current law regards lapbelts in the rear for the Mot? does it have to have them fitted?

You don't need belts in the back for the MOT as they weren't required when your van was registered, however, if you have them fitted they must meet the required standard (no rust near mounting points etc).

Well done on getting your van running nicely!! 8)

;)

Cheers Justin & muttley, more luck than judgement ;)

As I thought with the rear belts, but the fronts are not too clever as the fraying is quite bad. Might have a look at the wolfsburg 3 points and their lap belts for the rear. I'm hoping soeone might have a good pair of original fronts kicking about.
I'm also missing the blot/washer for the front stalk, and also the bolt, plastic washer etc for the floor mount.
