My mate's car keeps stopping on him. He says 'Its dying while I'm driving....quite worrying! Its fond of doing it while I'm going around roundabouts. I feel the steering going v stiff and then see the red light on. So far I've been lucky and its always been at night with no other traffic coming and I've managed to get it going again, but to think would could happen if I'm somewhere busy.....'

Any thoughts?

I'll find out what car etc...

Could be a lot of things, car details may shed some common faults.Maybe it is related to the night time when you use headlights it could be making it worse.Tell him to drive with the lights off and avoid roundabouts

i had exactly the same problem on my 66 beetle, everytime i hit a roundabout or speedbump it would die and on came the oil light.

I had a new clutch fitted (which it needed anyway) new plugs, and the carb tuned, it idles sweet as a nut, and doesnt die at all now.

The car is a 1995 Ford Escort 1.6v.

Thanks for the thoughts guys - my amateur thinking went along the lines of fuel problems / carb but not sure if this age car would have a carb or be a computer chip thing.

oh

i thought it was gonna be a type 1 or something, i didnt read the title

If it's the 16 Valve zetec lump then the problem is most likely a simple one.
Check the rubber air breather pipe which runs at the back of the engine from the inlet manifold (right at the back closest to drivers side) it then goes along the manifold to towards the passenger side and tucks under the coil pack connecting to a metal pipe I think.

Take the pipe right off and check for splits or collapsing. Also check any other rubber vacuum or breather pipes whilst you're there. And decarbonise the throttle body. This year car will be fuel injection with an ECU.
