So the new (recon) engine is through it's 500 miles and 1st service. It's disappointingly not quite oil tight, but better than the old one.

And now, a new graunching noise from the clutch.

It only happens when I change gear from 4th to 3rd when I need to change down to go up a hill. 4th to 3rd on deceleration is fine. 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 is fine.

The noise happens as I bring the clutch pedal up, so I am assuming it's not a syncro problem. And it's a brief (quarter of a second???) scraping sort of noise - similar to if you try and put it in gear without the clutch.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Nick

Try adjusting the cable first 8) its a good starting place

Hmm. But it goes into gear ok, and works fine for all other changes? Just in that one situation is makes the noise as I lift the clutch pedal.

I had the same on mine and adjusted the cable and all sorted

No probs  once you have done this, then its start with the gear stick...has it moved and are the bolts loose? Then its on to the linkage, check it all and see if any of it is worn. If none of these then its onto bigger things ;)

Well, I've adjusted it, and no change. :(

It's not the selection of gears that make the noise. It's when I bring the clutch up.

I think I'll just have to keep an eye on it. Or rather an ear....

It sounds like it could be the clutch release bearing I am hoping its not cos its an engine out job im afraid

Yes - it's possible that one of the clips has fallen off.

Just replaced on of the clips on my clutch release bearing, not that a hard of a job, it took me about 2 hours from start to finish.

Hmm. Well just done the Brighton Breeze and still happening - only when I change down for more power (so happened on 3rd to 2nd too (there are some steepish hills round there!)). Am I doing damage by carrying on regardless?

Nick

Why yes - didn't you realise? My engine produces 40bhp in 4th, 60bhp in 3rd and 100bhp in 2nd ;) :D

I'll give you the same advice I had, Get the engine out and have a look, basicaly if it is the clips holding the clutch release baring in, it could make things a lot worse if they both go!

I had similar issues when I got my new engine in and it turned out be the clutch release bearing clips. Personally I took the chance to upgrade the whole clutch and clutch release mechanism to the later system.

Well, you will never guess.....

It was the exhaust pipe! It was very close to the bumper, and the extra "surge" (more a whimper) of power when changing down under load brought them into contact, so it briefly made a vibrating noise. Cleared up when the exhaust was twisted further away :)

Phew!
