Hi All,

Did an oil change a few weeks back and replaced the oil filter with a fresh one from JK. Used the 2 new card gaskets and fresh washers etc, but i'm still suffering with some leakage from this area. appears to be coming from the edge of the plate not from any of the bolts or plug. I've nipped all the bolts up a couple of times now but don't want to go too mad as I've heard stories of them snapping off.

Any suggestions?

cheers

Assuming the mating surfaces were both clean, you're only reason it could leak is a non-flat sump plate or sump itself. As it is unlikely to be the sump at fault, take the plate off and put it on a piece of glass or mirror and see if you can see any obvious signs of being not-flat. If the oil is already leaking, tightening the nuts further isn't likely to stop it, and as you say, you could end up snapping one which would be somewhat more of a problem to sort!

the sump plate itself is og i believe. Haven't had an issue before with any leakage around that area, only since i've done the change this time and put a fresh filter plate in vs the old one.

the oil filter base will get straightened up when you tighten the sump plate up. Little annoying as to do much about it i need to dump all the new oil out.

I had a similar issue when chasing down oil leaks - only way I could cure it was to fit a billet sump plate, since then it's been leak free.

Unfortunately, until you take the plate back off, we'll all be guessing at why it's leaking. It may be the gaskets are a little thinner than the ones before and therefore they aren't taking up any imperfections, in which case a thin smear of hylomar blue on either side of the gasket before assembling will probably cure your leak. But it does mean a bit more cleaning up next time you do an oil change!

I had a similar problem but mine was a couple of threaded studs meant I couldn't do it tight enough. After fitting repair studs I used a good thick pair of gaskets and just nipped the 6 nuts up hand tight and it was leak free. The really thin gaskets are a lot less forgiving.

Think I've got a spare gasket set from JK so will give it a go.

Now might be accused of trying to be a tight Yorkshireman here, but is it ok to dump oil into clean container, change gasket then put oil back? Don't think it's been in for more than 100 miles!

You could strain it through some of the mrs s tights
That will filter out any bits
:)

As a fellow yorkshireman, I've done exactly that.

Oil came out a bit darker than it went in but only going to run it a few hundred miles and change for fresh as I had done some pretty major surgery.

Tights it is!

Unfortunately mine has to come apart for surgery but hoping to delay til end of summer by staying local. Hence I'm off hunting for tights now [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]

If you've had to tighten the dome nuts up again it sounds as if the studs have pulled their threads. Either take it all apart, clean and dry the threads and try some loctite, or drill and tap for some of the 8mm repair studs.
Just remember that you only need to tighten them to 5lb/ft.
