I was just wondering if that was rite on a warm day like this? I don't know why it's so high tin wear and rubbers are in place and in good nick the fan pully is tight oil is topped up. I'm not sure what else it could be

Positive it used to sit around 120c wen crusing on the motorway but today I took it out for a 2 min spin and it went past 160c off the end, the fan is pumping air and the oil pump is working. The only thing I can think of is the gauge wire earthing out some where but I can't find any thing

If its really 160 C then you have a problem. You certainly would not be able to hold the dipstick for instance.

If you can hold the dipstick then check the gauge - remove the sender, give it an earth and drop it in boiling water (in a kettle on an extension).

If its really hot then is the thermostat opening the flaps?
Is the fan clear? (check with a light and mirror or feel with your hand)
Is the fanbelt slipping?
Is it running too lean?
Ignition timing?
Valve clearances?

Thanks alot for your input guys, I had all of the gauge wireing out and checked it all put it all back together and took it for a run and it had much more sencible Reading out of it. You are right trikky2 it definatly was not over 160c the oil pipes going to the oil filter weren't even warm
