I've had one on both of my vans for 6 years, many trips to France on holiday with family etc. Never had a probem or breakdown. piece of mind and saves on the cost of points over time. Fit and forget.

How hard are they to fit, does the dizzy have to come out :?

dizzy doesnt need to come out, definitely a DIY job but be careful how you wire it. i think its just two screws to fir the pertronix type.

If you can change a set of points in-situ then you can fit a petronix.
You might need to check timing just incase but normally it should be OK

Its easier to get the wires through the distributor body with it out of the engine, red wire to positive side of the coil and black to negative.

As froggy said its worth resetting the timing with a strobe once the dissy back in.

I've never had a problem with Pertronix, on three motors for 6 years or so.

Don't bother with the matching 'Flame Thrower' coil, Bosch blue is as good if not better.

One thing no-one has mentioned is the MASSIVE design fault in the ignitor 1 module; If you leave the ignition on without engine running for more than a few seconds you stand a very high chance of burning the module out terminally. They rectified this with the Ignitor 2, but instead of just making that the new improved version, they still sell the ignitor 1 and charge TWICE the amount for the improved Ignitor 2.

Oh, and if you the Ignitor 1 wires onto the coil the wrong way round its new pertronix time too. Genius.

I've just put an ignitor 2 on my bus and its good, but pertronix are taking the piss massively by still selling the first version and charging double (120 quid!!!) for the one that has had the initial design flaws sorted.

Apols on rant, especially to those on VZi who have already had to put up with it.

But if you leave the ignition on without the engine running then you stand a good chance of burning out your coil anyway.

Hi!

Anyone tried this one:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=250409757617" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is this similar to the pertronix?

Or there is the 123 set up, which is a whole new shiny dizzy and ignition setup? Though that's a lot more money? Think about £200-250??

Not tried or heard of the first one before, but I recall hearing good reports on the 123 system - not sure if it was on here or Volkszone though.

If you want you can buy a kit and make your own for not much - think Maplin sell them.

I have used pertronix for a good few years in my 4 dubs and never had any problems. Never understood why you need the ignition left on anyway in a camper at least - everything I want to use when stationary is hooked up to either permanent live or the leisure battery - that said it wouldnt hurt to have some inbuilt insurance in case you forget to turn ignition off ;)

Petronics has been the best money I've ever spent on a Volksie - never had a problem with it,fit and forget. The most noticable thing about it for me has been the fuel economy - noticably less consumption. I'd recommend it with out hesitation. bought mine from 'Volksgoods'

I have run the Pertonix in my bus for some time.
Its nice not having to set the dwell an more.
If your point's are set correctly with a dwell of *50, Pertronix will not make your bus run any better.

Has anyone tried the Empi one from KingFisher http://www.kingfisherkustoms.co.uk/productDetail.php?productId=610&categoryId=23" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; its half the price of the Pertronix, is it a bargain or only half as good :?:

I wouldn't trust anything with EMPI on it, especially electrical.
