Can anyone help with an annoying problem? Last year I acquired a 1970 westy imported from Texas. I noticed then that when I fill the tank with petrol there is a strong smell of fuel inside the cab. The smell eases off after a while but gets more noicteable going up or down hills. Shes had the carb tunned so dont think its running rich and I cannot see any leaks. I know these US buses had carbon scrubbers but these had been removed from mine. Recently the petrol smell is stronger and is more noticeable when you open the wardrobe door in the van and this bit is nearest where you put in the fuel but still can't find any sign of leaks.

might well be the filler neck to tank rubber as these perish with age and are often not changed .

if you have only recently acquired the bus i would as a matter of course check all the fuel lines for condition and if its that cotton braided stuff bin it a.s.a.p and get some proper R9 unleaded fuel rated stuff .

if you remove the paint lid inside the engine bay with a bit of a twist of the neck you can just about see the filler neck rubber , my bet is thats it is riddled with cracks
