I am having problems at times starting my van. When it is cold and has not been started for an hour or so it'll strike first time, but if I try and start it within about 30 mins of using it, it struggles to start and quite often doesn't.

Surely it should struggle when it cold and not when it has been warmed up?

Is this a common problem?

"Hot Start".....

a very common issue with aircooled, older cars in general but very common on busses due to the rear engine and length of cabling involved.....

the tollerances between your starter and flywheel reduce due to heat/expansion so requires more effort from the battery to turn, it may be a simple matter of cleaning up all the connections between battery, ignition,starter.....

or fit a "hot start" "hard start" relay this reduces the resistive losses over the length of cabling and connectors requiring a lower draw to throw a local relay.....
