The rust under my windscreen is starting to get a little bit noticeable

Is there anyway to tell whether it's going to need major surgery or whether I'd be able to tackle it myself (bearing in mind that my skills with power tools stretches to a little DIY but nothing much else)

I'll post some photo's later to get some opinions on how bad people think it is

Pics will help, but if its bubbling then to eradicate it will require some or all of it to be cut out and welded back in. Obviously the sooner the better to minimise the amount of replacement required. If its not too bad then rust treatment and wax protection can hold things at bay ... I removed my screen then slopped on a load of wax and then refitted the screen, that was 4(?) years ago and it hasnt really got any worse. :)

Mines going into my mates body shop for a windscreen repair and a new seal on Monday, my bus came from California 4 years ago and it only got abit soft recently so I'm hoping it won't be too pricey.

When I saw the names "Hamster" & "The rust under my Windscreen", I thought Blimey, Hammond only bought the new Danbury last year, that didnt last long. Then I realised its a different Hamster.

Good luck with fixing the rust ;)

Yeah mate, no worries. The guy doing it is Dan Leech who runs Buswerxs in Martlesham, here's his number 07979845382. Say Karl Richardson recommended him :)

I'm sure he would give you an estimate if you went down.

I'm attaching some photo's (apologies for the poor quality)

What do you all think, how bad is it?

Looks like that has rotted through, bubbling like that could well turn out to be more troublesome. The problem is that the lip extends quite a way under the seal and it is under the seal that the water has probably been sitting doing its mischief. There are patch panels for just the lip:

http://www.customandcommercial.com/...=8692&Sub_Category=1303&group=61&category=213

These would take you to the edge of the seal you show but the bubbles are where you would need good metal to weld to. If there are only one or two they could be patched individually but I'd say there is a lot more waiting to be uncovered under the seal. Right now you should think about how far you want to go with this. As soon as you take the screen out you might find a bigger job on your hands. I had similar bubbles and ended up replacing the whole bulge and inner panel (not before I bought some second-hand lip repairs like the ones in the link  ).

So, beware of poking if you don't intend to start a fair bit of work. If you do find that you need the lip repairs above you can have mine (if I can find them!).

There is a thread on here discussing bulge panel sources but most are around the £90-£100 mark:

^^^ WHS ^^^

It's bad enough that it needs tackling I would say. If the van is stored outside it will only get worse quickly a lead to further water damage e.g. onto the fusebox, flasher units etc..
and also get internal panels wet and rusty.

This windscreen bit must be poor designn costhey all go like it eventually..

I'm waiting on a rough quote to sort it out now, I guess I was fooling myself I thinking it wasn't that bad :(

Ah well, at least once it's done it'll be one more job sorted, just gotta sort the bloody roof out now!
