shock abs

hi all just bought some shocks for my 72 danbury from gsf and had a mare of a day wi em rang em up and they are the correct 1s ! but the nut wont tighten up on the bottom shaft any 1 come across the same prob wot am i doin wrong :x :x some 1 gis a clue
