Hi, just as i landed on my driveway after a weekend of camping i was parking up at my house and noticed that 1st and 2nd was a little tricky to get to, and reverse was a little tricky too. But after 4 hours solid driving i just wanted to get parked in my spot on the drive so i kind of used a little more "effort" to get it in to reverse, and now i cant seem to find reverse and all of the other gears are like stirring a bowl of soup!!

i have a scat dragfast shifter and before this all of the gears were perfect, and would neve jump out, or have any trouble finding gears, with very little throw to get there.

Anyone got any ideas?? i havent been under it yet to investigate, but just wanted to know if this is something obvious that i'll need to get a part for when i'm under i at the weekend and suppliers are shut!!

any help would be cool and the gang.

cheers

Austin

First would be check the marks on the floor, shifter and bolts to see if its come loose or moved, next I'd be getting underneath the van and checking the condition of the bushes and shifter mecanism for any signs of damage, next after that I'd have the shifter off and inspect that for damage.

Might just be the rubber on the shifter bush thats gone, you can get nice polyurathane ones as a tougher replacement.

I had exactly the same problem and it turned out to be the gear linkage coupling. Mine was completely knackered and needed replacing, but may be a case of the little screw needing tightening.

Here's what it looks like. http://justkampers.co.uk/shop/type_2_bay/rear-gearbox-coupling-j10421-311798211.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just doing the exact same thing, it decided to part company on the M1 so had to get recovered :( . Trouble is I have just received a new coupling kit from Heritage and it is the cheapest piece of s*it I have ever seen and I am not fitting it to the van so looking for a better quality kit. I bought genuine VW aswell which is even more annoying, the parts are just cheap pressed steel bits.

thats not good that the VWH genuine parts are rubbish, i got mine from JK and they are repro, but the guys reckoned they were good quality, they come tomorrow to i'll let you all know.

Seems a coincidence??

^^^^^ thats not to good, but my scat shifter is fine, its still as good as new. its the linkage bushes and rear gearbox coupling.

been having a look in the bentley manual, and it says you need to remove the engine and gearbox to do this WTF!!?? i hope not!!

can anyone clear this up, as i'm working most of this weekend and havent got time to drop the engine and box!! and its my local meet sunday night, go to go in the bus!!

Changing my rear coupling was a 10 min job and i definitely didn't drop the engine and gearbox.

thats good to hear, the bentley manual is really good, but some times you cant help but think the author was on the pipe whilst writting some sections!!

yeah the replacement couplings are crap - best thing to do is use the new rubber bushes and the old metal cage.

Just received a repro coupling from Heritage and its spot on compared to the genuine one ! As above I just replaced the bushes and pin as my cage is ok, gear selection is very good now. Haynes manual says you only need to take the box out if you are replacing the rear bushes on the gear linkage.

my coupling came yesterday, its a genuine one and looks and feels pretty good quality, gonna go and and fit it in abotu a half and hour, so i'll let you know how it went.
