Hello, how do peoples vans smell, I would say mines smells bad of petrol, if i fill it to the top it leaks is this normal, i didnt know if there was a breather hole in the top or something :D

What would you guess surgest or is petrol smell nothing to worry about really, im not to hot on engine stuff although i wanna be :D

That dont sound good mate, if you can smell it you can ignite it

I've never removed a tank from any dubs but it will have vent pipes etc...possible a carbon filter.

Its time to start striping your tank out which means the engine aswell.

Theres plenty of people on here done work on there fuel systems that should be able to help, its always a good idea to replace those fuel lines and breathers etc..... 40 years of petrol fumes will surely have perished the rubbers anyway.
Good luck :)

Mine smells of Vanilla! no petrol from mine thank you! as all the others have said change all your fuel lines to start with and then go from there. 8)

ITS BEEN LIKE IT EVER SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT WHICH IS 1 AND HALF YEARS, BUT AM I RIGHT IN THINKING YOU SHOULD SMELL PETROL THEN...HAHA :D

smelling petrol is bad! the odd niff of hot engine from the rear vents but thats all dooood! 8)

Give Strongy a shout I know hes been replacing the rubbers to his tank, infact he may be able to help you steer clear of buying the wrong bits like he did... :)

Youll be surprised at how much an 8"rubber pipe will set you back thats all I can say, but then whats the price of piece of mind?

Turn it over and make sure theres no petrol coming from the fuel lines on top of the carburettor, it could be a loose or cracked line or the float needle/pin in the carb might be stuck which will cause the reservoir to fill up and spill.

there is a breather for the petrol tank, but you shouldn't smell petrol inside the van. you can buy fuel line kits of ebay cheap enough or fuel line hose from a motor factor, 6mm i think is the correct size.

If theres nothing visible from the engine id strongly suggest getting all your fuel lines checked and replaced.

Well im not sure what pipes are what, I have rubber pipe going to the round thing just infront and below the carb, and thats brand new, the only other pipes have like material around them, and they all look new as well, in november i had a new engine fitted so im guessing i had new pipes fitted then :D one thing i do notice is if i start the engine and then reverse all the fumes come in to the cab :D

When you fill it up at the garage you say it leaks, where from? and when you say fill it up is that right up to the cap ie the filler neck is also full?

Your fuel lines seem ok but it could well be the filler neck thats not seated/perished, also when you reverse your driving into that plume of fumes so it will be a little more intense.

should exhaust be able to get in the van, also I think when i last filled up, I filled up till it cut out and the petrol just leaked out from the bottom, im thinking it must be the filler neck that would make sense, which mean i still need to get the engine, which scares me

First off engine not a problem plenty on line but I wouldnt be too scared of that, get the assistance of a mate lots of tea n biccies.

Exhaust in the cab is bad, one of the symptoms of inhaling exhaust fumes is death. It can make you very drowsy when driving

Wheres it coming in vents rear hatch is it entering when driving or only when stood still?

no, only when i reverse, so its not to bad, it never come in when stood still or moving :D so i guess its just some odd screw wholes or something :D

My gf said she would help me take the engine out and she will feed me tea and biscuits :D

Do you think i could just drop it out but leave it in the bay just so i can get to the firewall to have a look :D

Not sure I'd put it out to someone thats changed there filler necks as I said earlier I know Strongy has been down that lane PM him.
Or drop it and make the call on the day.
Good luck anyway :D

Ours does this, assumed was ok, can you keep me in the loop with strongy response.
We get a smell on start up, and at high revs in a low gear :(

i would say if it smells when full change the breather pipe and filler pipe,

im not sure on the ones with a fire wall because mine hasent got one but you will be able to do this without taking the engine out(as long as you can get the fire wall of)

also take of your right hand side wheel and you can look thru to see where the fuel is drawn from, these are very comon for leaking and again can be changed while still on the bus,bit fidely if you have huge hands like me but not to bad,i would put a piece of white paper under it and leave it over night and see if you have any drip markes in the morning.

number 1 and 3 on hear are the breather pipes and number 9 is the bit you may need if you have marks on ya paper in the morning

as for the fuel filler pipe thats number 5 i got the short bit in the hope it would be long enougth but it wasent,

if it smells in the cab ,im guessing mabee the bottom pipe is leaking on to mabee your heater pipes hence the smell in the cab,(i think i would check this first as it involves just taking a wheel of :D hope this helps ,good look give me a shout if you need any thing else

thanks strongy, thats a good starting point :D
I dont have to use the bus for work anymore :( but least it gives me a chance to have a good look :D
