Hi everyone, wondered what everyone thought about the sound deadening in the engine bay of out beloved buses. Being extremely paranoid of engine fires I have wondered if it is worth removing the hardboard and the insulation above and use something more modern and fireproof as a replacement. As far as sound deadening goes there are definitely better and safer products out there. I've also noticed that a few people have not replaced theirs in what is otherwise a very sound bus, why? I'm going to fit one of the FireTec extinguishers also but wanted a few opinions on the subject.

I removed the original "cardboard" liner in the engine bay and fitted Dynamat for sound deadening then fitted a pierced ally sheet over it so I could attach cable ties to it when I fitted the FireTec Extinguisher

I had nothing in there when I bought the bus, so I purchased special sound deadening foam that was heat and oil resistant. The foam has a special smooth coating on the engine side and after I had installed it in the engine bay the sound had sifnificantly decreased. I can now talk to a passenger without having to shout.
Don't think this stuff is available in the UK though.

Anyway, I can reccommend it.

Cheers dude. When you took off the cardboard what was behind it? What I mean by this was there any metal framework, strengtheners or bracing behind the deadening?

Cheers Resto,

How thick was your special foam, did it come from a performance shop or stereo supplier?

Pub wisdom  where did you stick your sub out of interest, I'm assuming that's not a large baguette based sandwich :D

Interesting spelling of come John, shows where your mind goes after a few ;)

I bought the foam from a company that specialises in noise control, called Merford.
The foam comes in variable thicknesses and I bought the 25mm foam. It fits perfect.

The site is in Dutch but you'll get the idea. Dimensions and prices are listed.

This is one half installed.

Cheers dude that explains thing a bit easier. That's a nice looking engine bay you're rockin' there. I've now opted for some aluminised foil style felt nonsense made by FireTec 100% flame proof, I'll post a few picks when I install. Thanks gents for your input.
