It's a Westy handle Paul for the reason you mention, most snap and unless you find another you will have to use a standard microbus handle, the second handle makes it easier to close in the dead of night when the usual roar of a Bay door sliding wont go down well with fellow campers

All of that noise can be avoided, by using a rear-mounted pull-close strap of "helper handle", the latter of which seem to have been relatively common, on "early-bay", USA spec. Westfalias

This is the sliding-door, pull-close strap, I made for my British specification, right-hand drive, 1973 VW Type 2, Westfalia Continental campervan.

This is made from a 25 mm (i.e. 1 inch) wide strip of duralumin and some 25 mm (i.e. 1 inch) wide nylon webbing. I used grey webbing, whose neutral colour blends well, with the pastel-white interior, but I also have, black, blue, orange and some other colours I think.

The two 20 mm long screws, use the existing tapped holes, in the sliding-door, rear hinge mechanism, as does the special OEM helper handle.

The main sliding-door handle, is obstructed by the campervan furniture, so this strap mades it much easier to close the sliding door and much quieter too.

If anyone is interested, I have some some materials left, to make up some more, for either right-hand or left-hand sliding doors.

Thats a nice addition, my wife slams the hell out of the door without it shuting before I get in a piss and shut it

Armed with some 1200 wet & dry and a tube of G3 I grew some balls and attacked the paint.............

Its quite a strange thing to rub your shiney paintwork with sandpaper, but quite satisfying too 8) so I went to town on all the blemishes on the bodywork too and think once polished its gonna look fine, which is nice :D

Twas a nice day yesterday so took the van for the Easter family visits

Bit colder today tho with snow in the air................still, its good to get out and about in the bus again

I noticed I had some play in the steering so checked this today and had a loose castle nut on the rubber steering plate, all sorted now though, and a soggy brake peddle on the 1st press, once lifed off and pressed again its solid, so bled the front brakes and tested but still the same, so gonna try the rears next week and hopefully that will sort that issue out............

I also noticed the oil pressure light dont come on as it did, It comes on when 1st fired up and goes out as it should but after that its intermittent.........not sure if its a faulty switch? But as its easy enough to change Ill get another and try it.

Glad you found your balls
Once you start rubbing and polishing (the paint that is) the results will amaze

I cleaned the water tank and put some milk in the fridge and off we went....... Shame I didn't check the Gaz :msn4: yes it was empty haha, still, it was a nice dry sunny afternoon

I did the same what a difference it's made

I dug out the OG seatbelts yesterday, the retractable ones I fitted when I got the bus fouled the doors and stopped them closing properly at the bottom, also they were a PITA to get on.......

So cleaned them up and all fitted 8)

The PO was a big fella  had a bit of adjusting to do

I now need one of these hooks

Other side is missing the cover but hook in place

Retractor has broken arms but still works with some careful coaxing, hence I put it on the drivers side :msn4:

The retractors are great as they allow some slack without the belt being loose when on 8)

Just you can still buy the retractors i think from cool air.

Looking good 8)

And for reminding me about butty's linkage kit, was looking at mine at the weekend and trying to remember where I'd seen decent ones

Thanks mate

After taking to the painwork with 1200 wet&dry a machine polish was in order..............I couldnt justify a proper polisher so got a drill adapter off tinternet that came with two polishing pads and a mop. So armed with some polishing paste I set to work

It was quite satisfying seeing the marks that wont wash off coming off, on the whole it buffed up fine, but a couple of areas were a ***** I guess I heated the polish up on the paint and it baked on and took ages to rub off............

I then did a quick coat of Maguiers wax and called it a day, its now ready for the summer rain
