Gave it all a clean up and put it back together

Didn't make a blind bit of difference  so the problem is with the latch mechanism but guess what that won't come out cause the window mech is in the way so sod it

Not totally wasted job tho cause when I put the new door cards on I didn't realise I had to tuck the bottom of the membrane inside the door or else the water leaks in on the tubs....

So fingers crossed ill keep the water out :D

Ill do the otherside next week cause I'm sat waiting for Weck-it Ralph to start 8)

Trip to the cinema over, slider locks turn, it was getting sticky and the key was getting difficult to get out, also I could never lift the handle from the outside to pull the back of the door in...

Grub screw, out it came and had a good clean, don't do the grub up to tight otherwise the lock doesn't turn sweetly

Now for the inside mechanism. The part with the 2 large springs attached is a *****!!! Trust me it is possible to reassemble :msn4:

As you can see above it wasn't in good shape, the cover was bent too

Anyone trying the above, good bloody lucky to you!

Yea when the springs let go and everything shifted I thought about putting it in the bin

I think it has been modified with some screws now holding the back plate in place, I dont think this is original as the threads now protrude thru the front, but someone went to the trouble of drilling and tapping it to take the screws, it must have mangled itself up in the past and had its owner hanging off the handle to try and open it, hence the damage.......

If anyone has a lock I'de be interested in a spare........

my cab door locks are the same as yours in that when you lock it it can be un-locked no problem, but if you pull the trigger on the handle you can't. It's not a major problem buts its annoying

I found this thread on the samba which looks as though it may be the answer. I just need to find replacement springs!

Cool. Im not taking my window runners out again period! so mine are gonna stay as they are  Tho I did find that after a few turns of the key is will unlock, so Im happy with that overall.

here's another couple of links on this thread as well, including where to buy the springs. No excuse now for me not to have a go!

According to the link, the arm that fouls the lock will pull down.................I can see that snapping off in my case causing me no end of grief  Think Ill stick with 'joggling' of the key

Realised today that I didn't connect the lever from the top of the catch to the back mechanism above it, result being once the slider opens it won't unlock from the C pillar  so off it came again.......the back plate of the lock was screed to the body and I don't think this was original (maybe someone knows?) so I took them out, greased the internals and eventually got everything back in place and working. Annoyingly the little white catch kept falling down to the locked position every time I tried to shut the slider so I've never really known how it works......until now :msn4:

I didn't know that the handle comes up and pushes a pin out above the catch

The white catch is now not sloppy and stays in place, meaning it can be locked from inside :D

So I adjusted the catch on the B pillar

And now it shuts correctly

You can just see the 3 threaded holes (one above the white catch, one to the right of the handle) where the back was screwed on using some pan head screws meaning the lock didn't sit flush to the door

Hopefully that's that sorted for good

Justin.

Your door release handle is different to mine?!
Tracy struggles to open the door with the sink in the way, is this easyer you think?
I also noticed Dirtyharry had put a second handle on his.

A good idea if you need to get out quick like!

It's a Westy handle Paul for the reason you mention, most snap and unless you find another you will have to use a standard microbus handle, the second handle makes it easier to close in the dead of night when the usual roar of a Bay door sliding wont go down well with fellow campers

something for me to hunt for then.

Ta Justin.... keep ya eyes peeled for me please. :D

All of that noise can be avoided, by using a rear-mounted pull-close strap of "helper handle", the latter of which seem to have been relatively common, on "early-bay", USA spec. Westfalias

295020.jpg

This is the sliding-door, pull-close strap, I made for my British specification, right-hand drive, 1973 VW Type 2, Westfalia Continental campervan.

This is made from a 25 mm (i.e. 1 inch) wide strip of duralumin and some 25 mm (i.e. 1 inch) wide nylon webbing. I used grey webbing, whose neutral colour blends well, with the pastel-white interior, but I also have, black, blue, orange and some other colours I think.

The two 20 mm long screws, use the existing tapped holes, in the sliding-door, rear hinge mechanism, as does the special OEM helper handle.

The main sliding-door handle, is obstructed by the campervan furniture, so this strap mades it much easier to close the sliding door and much quieter too.

If anyone is interested, I have some some materials left, to make up some more, for either right-hand or left-hand sliding doors.

I bought one of these and fitted yesterday and it does make it easier and quieter when sliding shut the only thing i would say is the metal piece needs to be stronger as it bends when you pull the handle to close the door :D
cheers shaun
