Is it just me or does anyone else find that what should be a 20min job turns into an afternoon

Ive had a CoolAir starter since Vanfest '07 and my hot start problem has been getting worse so I thought ide get round to fitting it.

So after half hour or so i found the top bolt 'nut' behind the fan housing, i wasnt convinced it was the correct one even as I was unwinding it.........still came off no worries. fitted the new one, cleaned up the connections, bolted up the bolts (got the bruises to prove! off the axle stands, ran round to the front all smug-like, turned the key.............nothing! Not even so much as a click from the solenoid

Bugger!! so unbolted again, check the pinion was in and not jamming ect ect. put a cable direct to the battery and F/all!

So ended up re-fitting the old one! So after all that effort it was a total waste of time...and still wont start when its hot......going to fit a relay next.

Gonna try and send this faulty starter back, hopefully they will change it ok......

i hate it when shot like that happenes, on a plus side at least now you are a lot more familiar withe the process, next time it will be easy :p

may be worth bench testing the spare starter.

i know it sounds a silly question , but it sounds like you only put one cable to the battery is that right... coz if you did which i can't imagine you did, thats why it wouldn't work, but just supose you did you would need a wire to link from the main feed to the spade term as well to check the solinoid but also u need to earth it. But you know that..

I've just changed the starter motor on our 73 westy, worked great for a few days now it seems to be jamming! So off it will come and back to GSF!

I think mine cost me £65 at the time, tho it is stamped 'refurbished' well guess they forgot to actually refurbish it  How much is an equally bad GSF one?

i know how you feel, all is going well until you hit that 40 year old 'rusted solid' nut or bolt that shears even though its been soaked in release oil for two days. I spent 3 hours trying to get the firewall off because the original screws were set in an an angle! :x i guess it was a Friday afternoon at Wolsfburg when they fitted it.

I was relieved as when it did come off and i got the tank out it looked as fresh as if it was just out of the factory :)

Thanks Smudge

My iffy one proves the system works (well kinda) Im going to make up a relay and fit this to divert the long cable run thus high resistance when hot, this should sort it out, will fit the new starter when I sort out sending it back.

Cheers guys

Right take 2

Had another crack this avo, went to the trouble of making up a relay and loom, fitting the New Starter and wired up the relay and voila!
