Hi Guys,

I might need to change the steering box on my 69 bay,1st time out having recently bought it, I thought I'd give it a run out down to Bristol volks event at the weekend, the steering started to tighten up on the way down ( straight line tight.. turning corners free as a bird!!) driving it back from Bristol had a job to move the wheel when going staight, round corners ..no problem..

I have been told the old boxes are obsolete.. what are the options, are there any sources of good condition boxes or reconditioned units.

Thanks for any help

Mike

Recon og boxes are pretty freely available ... about £300

try readjusting first though ..

will definitely make it a bit better .. but depends how far gone the box is ..

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice, I will check out the adjustment on the box first.
Cheers

Mike

It's almost certainly adjusted up too tightly. Make sure you adjust with the axle jacked up and wheels free to turn. Check all joints and the big idle pin at the same time - people overtighten the boxes when the real problem lies with track rod end/idler pin/drag link joints.
