Im having to constantly correct the steering on my lowered van.Have fitted re-con steering box from mega-bug,all four ball joints exchange from cool-air,track rod ends, new drag link, and im still wandering down the road !!.
Just recieved drag link arm shaft and bushes to fit this weekend.I`m not over confident this will cure it !.
Any suggestions, tips, help, much appreciated.
Cheers Phil.

Not checked damper.How ?

Can`t believe it i have not had the tracking done either, guess i got to involved in replacing parts which could be the problem.Thanks.

My mega bug steering box was not great, a bit better than the old one but not £295 better.

Hope yours works out though.

I was thinking the same about the steering box,was hoping for great change when i fitted it,i did this before anything else
and to be honest not much difference.I was advised when i bought the van the steering box was well worn this is why i exchanged it.Gonna get the tracking done and see what that does.
Any more idea`s welcome.

take it off and work it , it should move but with resistance if you can do it too easily its failed and will need replacing

The steering is not as precise as on a modern rack and pinion equiped vehicle, remember this! If it is less accurate than to be expected then there is excess movement in one or more components. You need to be able to crawl underneath the vehicle and idealy have weight on the front wheels. Drive on ramps are ideal for this. Simply get underneath and have your assistant rock the steering back and forth gently whilst watching for a delay in movement at any given joint in the steering mechanism. There may be more than one!
Scary bit. Had lots of play, looked as above. Despite locking tabs appearing to have been in place for ever, found pinch bolt from column coupling to 'box was not fully tight. Nipped up, play all gone. Splines a little damaged, but all appears fine. How did that happen? (No, I had not touched this previously, nor had the supplier of the bus).
Have to check everything, never, ever 'presume' something is ok, even if you have done it yourself. Everyone misses something now and again.
The tracking is simply a check of the front wheels running parallel to each other, 4 wheel tracking ,that the fronts are parallel to the rears, 'nowt to do with play. Also, worn steering damper will not cause play but will accentuate 'normal' steering inaccuracy for a bus.

I understand that Creative engineering do a rack and pinion set up for early bays at about £550. Would this not be a good upgrade considering the cost of a reconditioned steering box and all the other components that could have wear.

Hi Wilkie

If your bus is lowered more than a few inches i wouldn't use the creative rack. It is a great piece of kit but it does sit lower than the bumper so on a bigger than average drop you could hit it on speed bumps etc. I have spoken to Dave and he now advertises these for stock or moderately lowered LHD's.

Well i`ve had a chance to look under the van whilst a freind rocks the steering.Good news ! there is play at the drag link pin
I have got a new pin and bush kit just building up courage to lay on a cold garage floor and fit it.Never done one before, any tips ? or just follow the book.Hope this will make the steering better, will let you all know when done and tested.
Thanks for all the help and sugestions.
cheers Phil.
