t1 engine & adaptor plate

Hi

We have a t1 1776 which we're planning on putting into a bus and as I understand it we would need to use an adaptor plate - which fixes to the oil pump mountings.

Our 1776 has a Berg full-flow and pump cover. Would this interfere with the bay adaptor kit, or have I got my wires crossed somewhere?

What you are referring to is this.

The adaptor is to allow a Type 1 case from a beetle to fit a Bay window body. If you have a universal case then you wont need it. If your case is an AS41 or universal case then it will have drillings corresponding to the 3 holes on the adaptor plate and if so the engine brace bar bolts directly to the case and the adaptor is not needed.
 
Hope yours is a universal case because the adaptor plate wont cope with a full flow since it wont allow for the outlet pipe on the pump.

True. I had this problem when I wanted to fit a full flow pump cover along with an adapter plate.
But there is a way round it.

Covered approx 2,500 miles since completing the work and no problems.
I have since seen an full flow adaptor that fits into the rear pressure relief valve housing (can't find it at the moment). This would get round the full flow and adaptor plate problem nicely.
 
Interesting solution. I'm pleased to hear you havn't suffered from any leaks, since I would have thought theres a possibility of movement.

When you consider it has to cope with all the torque induced twisting motion of the engine its surprising these adaptor brackets work. I have to admit that, from an engineering point of view, I find the idea of countering all the torque of a 1776 engine, which can produce 100 bhp, through the oil pump, somewhat daunting.

I agree trikky. It's a bit scary all that torque trying to twist through one plate and four bolts. But there are a lot of buses out there running T1 motors and this adaptor. I haven't heard of any crankcase/oil pump failures using this method.

My Bus is running a 1776 with a cam, IDF's etc so there is a fair amount of torque and so far it's as dry as a bone around the pump/mounting area.
 
if your planning the engine then just get it built with the right case, or have it properly drilled and tapped for full flow and not off the back of the pump.

get the right case and and you can avoid the above problems.

Hi Johnny,

If your planning a new engine build then yes you can get a case with the lugs tapped to take the standard engine mounts.

But whichever case you have in order to achieve full flow you still need to plug the pump, come off the back of the oil pump with a full flow cover (flow) and then drill and tap the main oil gallery(return).

Hi,

I just checked the number of the side of the case - it's an AS21 (brazil I think). I bought it new from Stateside tuning around sometime around 1996/1997.

From a quick visual it looks to have the same potential mountings as the 1600 twinport that was in our old Danbury. I'll fish out the camera and take a pic later.

From the looks of it the 1776 looks ok. However, the top left mount is obscured by the take-off from the pump cover. Is this ok, or do I need to get a different fitting to redirect the take-off?

JMR do just the thing:

45 degree oil fitting
On bay window buses, use this fitting to allow you to route the oil from the pump cover, past the engine support.

Berg also sell the entire cover + fitting:

GB 241B
As above properly modified for the 68-71 bus with the 45 degree fitting installed at proper angle and clearanced for easy installation. Some rear mounts may require slight dimpling. VW made 3 different versions of rear mounts, all different.
