Ok gang,, the engine is all but run in now :p So while we was running in , I wasn`t too concerned about being undergeared. Now I`m not sure if my gearing is substanstialy lower than the rest of the VW world but I think it may be as we are running an ex panel van (commercial). I let him have full throttle for a little burst yesterday and we hit 75 on the speedo about 60 ish in real life because of the little front wheels , it was virtually the same on the flat and pulling up a long hill :? This makes me think it`s got some sort of commercial gearing on there.
So , What options do I have ?????
Bigger back wheels will do it, the current 15" brms / tyres are the same size (circumference) as stock.
Different box, on the list as I`d like a new bellhousing (don`t ask)
Different diff ???
Just drive exta slow , would like to go a little bit faster than the lorries though.
Or just rev the nuts off it till it goes bang

Any grand ideas ??? Or just your thoughts,

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, Much appreciated by the way :D ;)

Just a quick one what size rear tyre are you running an a beetle box would seem a good idea for you I would say

Cheers rob

Hey Rob,, did you notice that I totally ignored that other post  bloody Sarky Pigs  And you ain`t exactly a light weight yourself (in the belly department). I`ll sort you out this weekend, I`ll make you so drunk you won`t be allowed home for a week, actually sounds like quite a nice idea don`t it :p  :p Anyhow,,,, Rob, at the moment I`m running on the back 165 80 15 s virtually the same size as my originals which was 14 s but it is hellishlly low geared. Beatle box sounds the way to go as well,, I was wondering if there was a low ratio diff in the commercials ?? But it does sound like you may have a cunning plan ?????

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,, Care to share :?: ,,,, ;) ;)

What's your gearbox code? I think Trikky posted up a list of codes and final drives not too long ago. Will see if I can find it........

Found it, edited version:

One other thing you should do is check the gearbox ratios. Below I have listed the gearings and gearbox codes for you but you still need to check manually by turning the input and counting the revolutions in top of the output flanges. The reason is that these boxes are old and you cannot be certain they have not been rebuilt in the past with a different c/w and pinion set.

Heres the details of the boxes as they left the factory - but check your box manually.

1.6 liter and 1.7 liter

1st 3.80
2nd 2.06
3rd 1.26
4th 0.89
final drive 5.375
Overall in top 4.407

1.8 liter

1st 3.78
2nd 2.06
3rd 1.26
4th 0.89
Final drive 4.86

2 liter

1st 3.78
2nd 2.06
3rd 1.26
Top 0.88
final drive 4.57
Overall in top 4.02

Final drive ratios for all gearboxes; 95%of 1-4th gearsets are the same just the dif that changes much

Sorry its such a long post :)

How small are your front tyres? And what rpm are you doing at 60mph?
To be honest it doesn't sound much out from my microbus, buses are generally badly geared so a 1600 motor can cope with hills.

Hey Ozzie! Beg / Steal / Borrow a sat nav and get a proper GPS reading on your speed rather than just assuming your speedo is massively out. On my wife's beetle's speedo, it was bang on despite the ickle front tyres after the lowering (hate to think how much it under-read through the cameras before we lowered it  ).

Yeah they are supposed to be spot on aren`t they. I have one in my daily but it`s a built in one. When I drove up to Lincoln the other weekend, I was sitting on 60 65 and got overtaken by every lorry on the motorway apart from a low loader with an escort front and rear  I may even invest in a sat nav for Mrs Ozziedog ;) but I`ll wait a little bit till I`ve got a *** lighter in my bus  just so I can test it out and show her how it works :msn4: What about bigger rear wheels that`s got to be the easiest option to gear up across the range ????

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, No one said it`ll be straight forward !! ;) :?

165s are a good height tyre and taller than the 185/65 most folk run out back, suspected you're overestimating just how much the speedo is over-reading? But if trucks are flashing past it usually means you're doing 50 :?
On ours with 185/60R14 front, the speedo is only 10% over according to mister Garmin, so 65-70 on the dial is about 60-65 real world and about safe max for the revs on a cruise with the low old 1600/1700 gearing.

Only proper way to check the gearing is to get the back in the air and count the turns at the wheel for turning the engine round by hand. Gearbox code on my beetle says it's a 1200 but I know it's a 3.88 because I put it there

Oh and you can check the speed with a blagged sat nav pre-ciggie lighter, they've got batteries built in you know and will run for long enough to get a reading!

Failing that, go cruise a motorway and level peg a Picasso late at night. Big ol' digital speedo in there you can peer at and see just how fast you're going

If you can't keep up with an old dear in a picasso, you're in real trouble

Failing that, all the motorways round here are end to end roadworks.
Pop up this way, do the same speed as every other hugger and I promise you that's 50! :p

You must know someone with an iPhone or blackberry... I think they both have sat nav, plus you can download apps for 0-60 on the iPhone... The graphs might help you figure out if your massively low geared..!
