Has anyone got any thoughts or recommendations/advice on where to source the best new SVDA for 1600TP (stock).

2nd hand original bosch units appear thin on the ground.

I have been advised that many of the repro units have week or badly balanced springs which means that timing is hit and miss and can degrade over time?

Does anyone make a simple reliable unit nowadays ....or is it trial and error?

Would be interested to know what experienced mechanics fit at the moment.

Thanks

I would give this a thought:

Hope this helps,

All my best,

Alex

Thanks Alex,

I would be interested to have your thoughts on the difference between the Pertronix unit and the SSP unit

The SSP is Good,

But the Pertronix is better and also has an electronic ignition fitted already so means less drama in the long run.

I got a 123 unit from Paruzzi and its one of the best changes I made. Did have a acuspark, but discovered that the advance was not 'advancing enough' at 3000 rpm when set at idle. Expensive, but good

Apart from the cost .... is there anything against 123? Having done a quick search everything seems pretty positive.

The Pertronix is £162.50 at VW Heritage

The 123 is 239 Euros (£184.50) at Leenapk .... https://www.123ignitionshop.com/gb/volkswagen/21-123VWRV.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So either way quite an investment.

No negative points from me, won't cook itself if the ignition is left on. Has a rock steady idle, starts great, can use any standard coil and standard quality leads. I don't have any spares for it, contemplating carrying old distributor, but decided to trust it!

I've been a big fan of the 123 and its been fitted to two of my buses. Its an investment yes, but depends on other priorities and I like the fact that it always starts. Having said that, the basics when well maintained still do the job
