Hi all, with an impending engine swap coming up I need some advice.

I will be fitting a new 34pict3 carb and running with a 009 dizzy. I've read much about static ignition timing but reckon you guys would know best ;) I'm thinking that 7.5 btdc should get the engine running?
Now with a new carb and the ingition is there any clues as to setting up? I need to get the carb adjusted to idle smooth enough to set the ignition a 3500 rpm, but also need the timing just about right at idle to adjust the carb :? bit of a chicken and egg.

Any advice/help will be much appreciated :)

Firstly you must set the valve clearances and points gap.

If you really must use a 009  (which is the wrong dizzy to use with a stock carb) then you must not time it statically other than to get the engine running. The only way to time a 009 properly is to set it at 28 degrees BTDC at 3000+ rpm. This is the rpm your engine will be doing most of the time it is working hard - when timing is critical for cool running.

You may well end up with a flat spot when accelerating - this is because the 009 has the wrong advance curve for the stock carb. Get yourself a proper SVDA dizzy - you will get better mpg, smoother running and better acceleration.

Hiya BJ1,

I've preformed a little mod to the new carb I'm fitting, and upped the jets a touch, will be interesting to see what effect it has ;)

The new engine I picked up today originally had a svda but the guy stuck a 009 on it  I also have a petronix kit sat doing nothing so might as well play with it :)

I will probably have a bit of flaffing about to do when trying to run it at first and patience will be order of the day. I will see how it goes and if not happy then I'll go for an svda.

advance the acellerator pump to max ,you will see + - on linkage to pump ,set to +,this will help get over flat spot.
