What's this floating nut for chaps in the cylinder head tins ?

It's for a small piece of tinware that has a gasket and seals around your pre-heat pipe. The other part of the small tinware fastens to your rear tinware with 2 screws. VW heritage sell the little gaskets.
 
Mine have them but as I have a twin carb set up I use that extra hole for the return spring :lol:
Or.. I did, on the engine I pulled out, not on the one going in.

I thought I'd seen them without before ;) I don't have the covers for the manifold heat pipes so I'm none the wiser.
