IS MY FANBELT OUT OF ALIGNMENT??????

Bit of advice if you please as want to sort this out as
It's the only thing that ever goes wrong with the Camper
My bus has a tendancy to go thru Top pulleys on a
6 monthly basis and currently I'm using
A locking washer/nut combo just to keep the thing in place!
I've got a 1600TP and it was fitted with what looks
Like a new alternator before it shipped from the States
But I've read somewhere that if you convert from
Dyno to Alternator you need to replace the back plate also???

How do I work out if this has already been sorted???

Also the alternator is made by MOTOROLA which makes me
Question things???

One thing that doesn't help us that my engine has had the
Number ground away from the case (i hear this is quite common
on US remanufactured engines) so I have no idea if it
Had a Dyno or Alternator in the first place so I guess the tinware
Isn't original either?
When I look at the alignment of the pulleys it looks to me that
The bottom pulley sits out further than the top one!
Also what size fan belt should I be using as again it's based
On the bottom pulley, how do I work this out without an engine no.??

Any help gratefully received

Cheers

Spence

can you post up some clear pics , front and side view so we can see what youve got then we can deal with the alignment , repro pulleys are crap get a nos one from megabug or fbi somewhere where they break vws (its defo alternator youve got? ) post some pics first ;)

thanks

chris

I'll get some pics up shortly,
I've currently got a OEM top pulley from FBI with the two slots in that you align up to the
Rear pulley to avoid slip, this hasn't mangled yet but the slots have gotten larger due to movement and the fan belt doesn't keep it's correct tautness for too long
Only a matter of time before something else happens!
Cheers

Ok here's some pictures,
Hopefully you can see that the fan belt is not sitting fully vertical but heads back to the
Top pulley seems to be out of alignment.

Any help appreciated
:)

The pedestal looks original but wether its for an Alternator or Generator is beyond me?
Also the alternator is made by MOTOROLA which makes me Question things???
I've just Spoke to Ben at VW Heritage who advised
That CB shims may work?
Picture of pedestal below
Looks the same as Hwritage one to me?

It looks like you do not have enough shims between the top pulley plates to me...

If the outer plate does not sit squarely on the boss it'll shake itself free and wreck itself.

Jim

Edit: may just be a trick of the camera lense though?

Have you got enough shims overall? I can't remember the exact number needed but if you have to many or too few this will happen, had it happen myself. Get a Bugpack spin-Tru pulley if you can't get an nos item, their £20 odd but are the nuts!

Maybe its an altenator from a beetle, they are a bit shorter than the ones on a bus :?

Ok I just counted them,

I got 10 shims in total and only 3 inbetween the pulleys - any more and the fanbelt will be too loose.

I thought this setting was about right? :?

cheers

take a look at the 7th picture down from the first lot of photos
you can sort of see it - the backing plate looks as old as the fanhousing IMO
- i'm working now till 11pm so cant take any more photos until then

The Alternator is sitting too far back as opposed to too proud so I guess I shim it the other way?

I havent heard of this before... mind you - last time i replaced an alternator on on VW was in about '92

hi fella just got back from the gym   it wont last   anyhow good pics it looks like your alternator is leaning upwards and backwards ok firstly ,make sure your fan shroud is sitting nicely front and back (get you hand round the back you'll be able to feel it ) inside the the cylinder head tins otherwise it can throw everything out ........if it isnt get it sitting nice by slackening the two small 10mm screws each side of the fan housing ,take the belt off and slacken the strap that goes around the alternator then jiggle the tinware into the right position ,inside the cylinder head tins ...........the alternator should sit better now then get a straight edge or steel ruler and put the edge across the bottom pulley till it touhes the alternator pulley after jiggling the tinware around then tighten up alternator strap and lastly the two small fan house screws ............keep checking the alignment as you go ...........

chris

Cheers for the advice Chris - I wont be able to look down this route sort this now till Monday as working all weekend.

I'll should be able to get some better pics of the backing plate on tomorrow though.

PS - I know what you mean about the gym and I aint even got off my lazy butt and joined one yet - maybe next month

Spence

The belt looks like its the wrong one too. Too long - it should not be sitting so high up in the alternator pulley. Sitting that high will reduce the fan speed from optimum.

Your oil filler/breather is leaking.
