whoops - thought I'd take the van to work after swapping the dizzy and carb to fix a stall on idle issue...tested fine at the weekend...on the A14/A10 roundabout and just died and wouldn't restart  - sat for 10 mins right in the middle blocking entry onto the roundabout and the main lane into cambridge with cars/lorries beeping and pushing past until a nice bloke in a Rav4 got out and offered me a push 8)

As he himself said to me "people are *******s" - how true - karma coming his way for helping me out!

Used the free recovery with my insurance and they came in 30 mins with a low loader and took the van back home :(

Now got to find out the problem - think it's going to be an engine out job and get it sorted once and for all - vacuum leak I think, with over adjustment of the fueling to mask the issue on my drive at the weekend, resulting in carb flooding after it had warmed up properly on the dual carraigeway for 20mins - was idle dying, blipped throttle, died again, blipped throttle and it cut out - started again after sitting for 30mins as I drove it on the flat bed :?

not nice dude, especialy when you think you had it fixed, been there plenty of times :(

Good luck getting it sorted though.

Cheers - will get there eventually, just ordered a new pump and flange as they were £18 - the old carb I took off suffered the same issue and appeared to have been leaking fuel from the float chamber so worth it to discount out of the equation,

As I was saying to the guys in my office - rather break down on work time and get paid for it :D - luckily I have an understanding boss!

o.k. - so whipped out the old pump, plastic flange and push rod.....but looking in the bentley to confirm - the old push rod was in upside down??? Would this make a difference? One end is tapered and I assume rides on a cam, whilst the other is flat - I'm thinking if the flat end was down then could it have made a noticeable difference in pump performance?

Also looks like the old pump was leaking fuel back into the oil as the top of the plastic flange was covered in it - just wondering what sort of difference this would make with thinned oil?

Either enough to affect idle performance? Especially if I had to over adjust the small fuel screw on the carb to get it to idle well?

If not I'll replace the rubber boots on the inlet manifold - will take a look see if it can be done with engine in

Ta,

Larry

Maybe ,but if a bus is going the pushrod will not cause the bus to just stop.. ;)

Experience is a great thing I have broke down loads , but always known what is wrong straight away ,good luck fixing you bus ... 8)

Cheers - took it for a 2 min run after changing the pump, has cured a slight oil leak from the base of the pump so worth the effort - timed and tuned and it is idling much better but a long run will tell for sure - getting the boots in the post next week so will replace both for good measure, adjust valves and replace intake manifold gaskets whilst I'm there !

managed to remove the old boot (one looks like a replacement already) and was suprised at how smoothly this went, just take on the inlet manifold and a bit of "persuasion" and it popped out so I could change the boot,

The JK manifold gaskets I got didn't seem to fit at all (the locating hole just wouldn't go on the pin) :( - so put the old one back on and tightened it up - just the tin to go back and I'll give it a test!

One thing I did uncover though.....seems the bolts to the preheat pipes on the manifold from the exhaust are mullered  and the exhaust is leaking from the flange - loads of black crap on the underside of the tin from this, so I'm thinking it will be suffering from a lack of back pressure as well! - not sure what this would affect performance wise, though it can't be good having exhaust fumes entering the engine bay?

T2D are only 15 miles from me so going to contact them about fixing - but assuming if the preheat exhaust connections are knackered it's a new exhaust job to resolve - hopefully something they will be able to sort for me

Sounds like you are getting there.

Fingers crossed ;)

Cheers  - getting there and what it has done is get me intimately acquainted with my bus! All good, as a new-comer to air cooled it's great to be able to get stuck in and hopefully for the future nothing will be a mystery - all part of the fun!
