Can't say the current condition of a Bay so I am scooping out the possibilities at hand.

I'm looking forward to a '71 Weekender Westfalia Camper (hardtop)

Parked several years ago, in great shape all around,
All except* You knew it was coming...
I believe by tell of the owner that either the tranny has gone out(syncros) or it could be as simple as new clutch/pressure plate.

(He couldnt find 1st...and struggles to hop into second.) I dont know haven't had the pleasure of trying it out. :?

I believe 3rd and 4th go fine.

So what do you think by the knowlege given might it be? And What years would work for a tranny swap (saying I had to) '68-'72.5/3?
Or
Is the Vw Bus tranny kept the same throughout with only change happening to the motor?

Oh and if I had a choice is there a stronger tranny(perfered tranny?)

Thanks in advance,
MagicEddie

I'd start by checking the state of the coupling between the shift rod and the gearbox where it attaches at the front on the gearbox. Also check the condition of the bush on the front of the shift rod where it is supported at the front. Wear in any of these places will cause difficulty in selecting gears.

Could it just be a clutch cable that needs adjusting, i.e there's too much slack and the clutch is not fully disengaging?

Another culprit is shift plate at base of gearstick (in cab). If there's any play in shift rod, as Clarkson 46 suggests, the shift will be tricky and the previous owner will have spent the last decade or so jamming the gearstick about to find gears, and this wears the shift plate. Good news is they're cheap as chips (thats fries to you) and easy to fit.

Haha thanks for the replies guys! And translations  I'm going to have to wait out winter, but this will all help come the time! Thanks agian
