Hi folks,

Firstly, apologies mods- I know this should really be in tech but I'm having a bit of a nightmare and just wanted the most people to cast their eye over it :(

I thought I'd change the gearbox oil today and after draining it I started to refill using a plastic squeezy waterbottle and here is where it's gone horribly wrong as the little white plastic 'teat' has dropped off the end into the gearbox. I tried flushing it out with the oil that I'd managed to put in there but it hasn't come out...........thing is there's no way of hooking it out from the fill-hole and doesn't seem to be any way of doing it from the drain hole

Just wondering what the best course of action would be, ie whether the gearbox will happily munch up a soft plastic thing which I can flush out with another oil change or whether I've triggered something morer serious!

I'm kicking myself and the poor old bus is sitting on double yellos outside my house at the mo as my drive isn't flat enough

Any advice would be gratefully received, cheers

Olly

I would have thought that it would just get chewed up and empty out next time the oil is changed . but dont take my word for that  :!: .Hopefully someone on here will know for sure ..

sorry not much help but hope you get it sorted dude . ;)

Again dont take this as advice ! just support ! :p

if it was me (and its just the sort of thing i would do) i would put it all back together, just think how much strane and pressure your gear box had been through lugging a bus around for 40 year, all the gear changers, it will rip that little piece of plastic into little bits. Don't think it will ever get hot enough to ment it. I would do as many miles around town changing gear as soon as you can maybe a few hundred miles then change the oil again, looking for little white bits. if it was metal or in your heads etc, rebuild time but as for a little bit of plastic in a gearbox i'd just run it mate.

i'm very laid back and always just hope for the best, if your a worrier have a work with a local garage. There is a god in gearbox rebuild of all sort in nottingham, i can get his number if you want a chat yo settle your mind mate.

I would certainly move it off the double yellows mate, you know sods law and all that! I would be inclinded to agree with letting the plastic get chewed up,it will just get mulched if it goes anywhere near the cogs,it may even find a quiet spot to settle in. not an ideal situation granted but not the end of the world either.

If it was a washer or bolt then I wouldn't hesitate to say get the gearbox out but I personally can't see it doing any lasting damage, not like there is fine oil galleries that could be blocked like an engine.

It might be worth doing more than the usual oil changes and for peace of mind, checking to see how much of the plastic has come out each time.

all IMHO of course! ;) don't fret mate, they are strong machines!!

Many thanks for your kind words fellas- I love it on here  In the end I just filled up and I'll keep a close eye on it just to make sure I'd notice owt out the ordinary- first impression was that the gear change was a lot smoother from neutral though so it was probably overdue a change...

I agree with you all and figured it'll get multched if it gets in the gears and may even just settle on the bottom (dunno how much the oil gets thrown about in the box?), after all, it would seem a bit strange for a small thin bit of plastic to take down a 40 year old gear box built like a brick shiphouse so let's hope so:lol:

And a lesson to be learnt, bottles are fine for engine oil as there's much more clearance but not so handy for the gearbox filler!

Cheers, think I need an ale or three to calm my nerves
