For myself its aircooled only but thats a personal thing as my bus isn't standard (lowered & tweaked.) Regarding value though the suburu conversion is cheap :D A couple of months ago I bought a 1990s legacy off ebay for my m8, one months T&T & one owner. Engine runs like a dream £250 :shock: :shock: :mrgreen: Now take into account all the other parts off the suburu that can be sold & my m8 will be selling his running vw engine complete (engine/carbs/exhaust) the conversion is going to cost him sod all. He pulls a trailer tent plus kids & gear in the van & the suburu will pull it easily, cruise well & return good mpg (relative). So you can't really blame him for doing it.
Me though its aircooled all the way ;) :mrgreen:

To be honest I have no issue with fitting a scooby lump, the only thing I have any issue is with driving my van at any other speed other than its max 55mph, prahaps its just my van, but I really dont fancy driving it at any higher speeds!

Do you feel the same way about an air-cooled porsche engine or are these ok?

Kind of agree with the scooby remark but would still like to drive 1

Yeah, 'cos they just bolt straight in, don't they...

So they say.... ;)

i too am building a diesel powered bay. http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1593" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i nearly strayed to an alfa lump at one point but soon sorted that out and went to a vw td lump

free veg oil from work and reliability sold it for me. i understand why folk love the aircooled lump in fact given the choice i would love a turbo'd type 1 lump in the back but no good for european touring.

hopefully mine will be tastefully done and keep the original look of the van with a deluxe, westy, porsche twist.

it's not just an engine change you have to do cost in brake upgrades etc, insurance must be more also.
I had my mid life crisis and went out a bought a scooby, cost 1200 a year to insure and returned 22mpg on a motorway run, at the time I was doing 35000 miles a year business so the bank(mrs) soon got rid of that

you also need to think of a gearing upgrade, wouldn't a turbo'd scooby soon chew through the standard bus 1.6 box?
