I may be able to help with this.

My van (68) came with the ignition barrel missing but the rest of the column and housing is complete.

I sourced a complete 68 steering column with lock & key.

However I still haven't fitted it. Once it's on my van, the rest of the bits that came on my van will be available, but I'm not sure when I'll get it fitted. It's not a job I've done before and from what I've heard it's pretty tricky.

I'll take some pics tomorrow so you can see what I've got.

Ooh looking forward to the pics, take as many as you can and try and measure too, like I''ve, i mean the technician, has attempted to do.

Cheers

I was talking to my friend about this toay and I still forgot to take the pictures, will go and do it now.

I'm up there today, I will supervise an audit of the procudure and check calibration records of the instrument - but to be honest I think the art director handled all the media releases and any images were just for demonstration only, I'll take it up with the production manager as to be honest it's embarressing if there's a mistake. If you weren't so far away i'd offer you to take this whole thing over - do you freelance?

Think the art director and production manager did a fair job to be honest. Now the technician  - lets just say give him a measuring tape - it would be a lot more accurate
Sorry I don't do freelance as I've a full time job as a smart arse - erm I mean engineer :)

Cheers ;)

Well you are a very keen-eyed engineer - the experiment was again conducted and the findings were a centre to centre measurement of 62mm. Our technician has resigned, it's for the best.

here's what I've got, this is my "new" column, it came off a 68 from South Africa:

Please excuse the crude measuring, I couldn't find a decent ruler and it's really tricky taking pics one handed when lying on the cab floor!

From this it doesn't seem to have the notch at the top like should be there on a 68 piece, so I'm not sure what to do now as I too want my bus to be correct where possible.

That one was going to go on Hank.

Here's what I have fitted at the moment:

Oooh thanks for taking all those Sara, i've got to check all that against mine again to be sure but the underside arrangment certainly looks the same. Thanks for measuring -the sure-fire way I know if it's the one I want is the centre-centre distance of the alloy steering lock housing, I'm estimating it from your pics but the van lives 12 miles away from me at the moment so I will check again next time I'm up there.

I'll pm you if it's a goer. And congrats on your van, great thread and hats off for doing all the work, very impressed. That orange garage door is pretty cool too, very 1968, very Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.

...and relax...phew :)
