Westy wardrobe mod

Just wondered if anyone had done something like this before, I'm sure i've seen it somewhere..


I had to get the wardrobe out to replace the side window seal, It fell apart so while it was out decided to try and make a lower version, that comes up to just below the side window.

Still a work in progress but i'll see if i like it when its in, Found some trim that will do the job too, not an exact match but pretty close. It wont be a perfect match finish wise but hopefully it'll be near enough.

Havent had chance to fit it yet so fingers crossed..

Sure i've seen this done before where the cut down wardrobe was made the same height as the bed meaning that it would them become a full width bed in bed mode but still a 3/4 seat with wardrobe / work surface in seat mode (hope that makes sense)

Hi Fella, I have seen this done before, they made a matresse to run along the top to make the bed full width. 8) Keep us updated with the pics.

I have the sheets of ply in the garage ready to do the self same thing, spooky or what eh? Will be changing the front of the bed also (and fitting speakers) along with a revised verion of the buddy seat.

OK had a trail fitting,

Need to source some proper westy trim and hinges, the door edging stuff is unavailable as far as i can see, but i have found the edging trim or something that looks similar. I even considered finding another knackered wardrobe to cannibalise, so if anyone has one..

Also the back shelf was attached to the wardrobe, so i'll have to work something out there too.

This is also something that I have considered, but as my westy wardrobe is a RHD I wouldn't have the heart! (although I am re-laminating it) I'd have to make a template from it, never really thought about the whole 3/4-full size bed plus point though, the reason I though about it was purely from a light point of view, thought that not blocking that window up will make the bus considerably brighter. I'm choosing a brighter laminate than the original Westy so hopefully that will be enough, just have to wait and see!

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread though!

I'm tempted to do this to mine I find it a real blind spot when overtaking...also would make the van much more airier (if thats even a word) and brighter. Who needs a wardrobe anyway?!

I have seen it done, but never to a high standard. this will solve a few problems too as you will be able to fit a decent 3 point seat belt now.

the westy door trim is available, but its not cheap, and a bitch to fit!

Had a bit more time on this so thought id update with some pics, i'm pretty pleased with it, by the way i'm no joiner.. just wanted to have a go and see what it looked like. Ive still got the original wardrobe so can go back to stock. Hasn't cost that much either, sheet of ply, bits of trim from B and Q, got some westy type trim for a tenner at dubfreeze.

Tried some dodgy fablon covering.. which came off as quickly as it went on... its now back to wood and being varnished to match as near as i can

It really has opened it up in the back, much lighter and makes it seem much bigger.
Still some bits to do but hopefully it gives you an idea.
