what wheel arches can go on what years?

Per 72 front has flat arches rear have small flare. After 73 front has lipped arches and large flared arches at the rear. 71-72 sees the crossover model usually with lipped front and large rear arches, however as vw where using up early panels to change over to the 'late' bay you can get crossover models with a mix of both.

Would suggest you replace like for like to keep the vehicles value.

As above, but if like me you have a crossover then its pretty damn hard to find arches that have a lip and an external step. I ended up using genuine late arches and cutting the internal step away (not as difficult as it 1st seemed) new floor and filled the gap between arch and floor

yep my 71 has flat front and flared rear, handy for fitting fat rear tyres.

have fitted more cross over front arches than any other,just cut off step so level with floor to arch filler ,simple
