i've been a lurker to this forum for quite some time before i registered, and have noticed on a few occasions that many of the guys on here that have a high post count react in a really bitchy way to a new member if his/her first couple of posts aren't of a 'hello everyone i'm new *all waves and smiles*' type of content.

now correct me if i'm wrong but this place is supposedly a laid back no politics approach to a vw forum???? so why the harsh replies and *roll eyes* icons to anyone who starts posting without introducing themselves and their life story before hand? :?

hi welcome to the forum   lol

i thinks its just when peoples first post is trying to sell us something

some people think its a bit rude to sign up just to flog something, especially when its not even early bay related.

as far as i can see most of us are a friendly, helpful bunch 8)

I think you'll find its more aimed at people posting items for sale rather than advice or banter, having never applied that tact myself I can see the point from those that have been here for some time and have seen people posting to sell something then never again contributing to the common good.

Even door to door salesmen introduce themselves, they are not asking a lot just a quick howdie and a few words about yourself/bus. Common courtesy, friendly and open...after all primarily its a forum to exchange ideas, experiences, and earlybay adoration not just a shop window for people to ply their wares (though we all like to see a healthy sales and wants).

They are a real good bunch of guys and gals who welcome all without hesitation, ridicule or mockery maybe they get a little pissed at people trying to offload stuff at times but hey we all have our days when summit gets to us....

Well thats my two penneth anyhoos...

thanks for your replies guys. i understand what you are saying but....... surely its not a bad thing even if it is a first post of someones if they're selling something (unless its not vw related then i can see your point). if someone advertises something vw related on here it could potentially benefit any one of us, so regarding of post count i can't understand why its seen frowned upon :?:

You will always get some sort of abuse from any internet forum. Some people think they own the place, ( I am generalising about the internet & EB)
If youlook on VZi (when it works) some people with high post rates, don't have anything better to do than worry about other people & what they think.

I got slated for saying a standard ride height bay with alloys looked gay & I was talking about my own van! I was not allowed to degrade gay people.

Everyone is entitled to their oppinion & in some cases ie the tech help that can be good.

Welcome to EB, you can't please everyone, so just kick back & relax. This probably the best VW forum that anyone can use, it's a community & a good place to hang out. It is self regulated to stop things getting out of hand.

Personally I think they are doing a good job.

Now I best go & do some work to my '69...

Also I have found that some people don't spell or punctuate properly, so their posts can come across a bit harsh. This is the drawback with written communication.

Generally speaking I still find the EB forum has a great feel to it - I have to do very little moderation (particularly having heard how much time others spend moderating their forums ...) so long may it continue. The issue of people signing up to just post a For Sale has been raised - it is a tricky one because I can see both sides - it may be very useful for someone on here (as long as its VW-related - I may clamp down on this but there arent really many that arent VW ...), but also just nice to post a quick intro (doesnt have to be a life-story !)

Mike.

Welcome aboard Rob!

A forum's like life. Try as hard as you like to be nice but, you can't completely avoid the arseholes (or something like that).

I can't think of any forum where they don't sort of expect an introduction post as your first- even just a 'Hi, I'm here! Don't even own a VW but I hope to get one soon!' sort of thing.

I've had people have a proper go at me on VZi and JK but I have also made some of my best friends on those forums. As I said, a bit like life.

So, do you have an early bay?

I believe that i am the highest poster on here, so i do hope that you are not refering to me. When new people join we all try and make them as welcome as possible, without exception, but i am sure that if you are indeed new to this forum it will be hard for you to understand the sense of humour as there are allot of in jokes etc, but no nasty nasty.

Please do not compare this site to all of the other forums around the internet as it is different by a million miles. Nice, cool very knowledgeable people all willing to help each other out even tho most of us have never actually met in the flesh.

I am sure that if you look at the people that have joined, you will have seen that they have been given a great welcome and have found this site to be very helpful and informative. :D

I believe what you have said to be very untrue and as one of the original early members I have seen this site grow and turn into a truely unique site. To be honest there have been about 2 heated debates since the begining and this is now the third, not bad for a forum of 100s of members. 8)

Hey Rob,

i know this is probably in reference to a post i made yeaterday, but we are a mannerly bunch on here i think, how long does it take to post a "hi my name is 'insert name' i have had a van/bug for X years, i have a few bits and pieces id like to sell you" etc? 15 secs maybe? .

I think these are the best and most layed back and 'friendly' forums, i know we all want to keep it friendly and personal. It isn't like certain other large forums (if it was, personally i would leave) its a small bunch of enthuaists who enjoy meeting other people talking about their vans. In certain other large forums you can log on post forsale and leave, thats really impersonal and no one cares that much.

I think youll find everyone here cares and wants to be friendly. lets keep it that way? personally i dont want another VZI etc. :(

hey dude, yes you were one of, but not the only one. i have no problem with you or anyone else here and actually think its a great forum. but wether it takes 15 secs or 2 seconds i don't deem it impolite of someone just because they choose not to introduce themselves before they begin posting. if someone uses the for sale board to post an item for sale just as a one off and has no plans to further use the forum then whats the point of an introduction? likewise if someone does stick around and become a regular poster surely you'll come to know them anyway :D

Then why the thread title?

hmmmm confused. what should the thread title read then?

well no not really...........

the old vzi 'you haven't been here long so you must not know much about anything'

as i said i've been lurking for a lot longer than i've been a registered user

Maybe some people have bad days sometimes, everyone one can be a little grouchy up on occasion but hey we can all forgive that, and nothing wrong with people asking people to be polite don't wanna be a bunch of chavs now....hahahaha I am always mocking them, but yet they are a good race at heart.

But still in general terms i like this place, I have never had anyone say anything bad to me, even though i have tried to sell some of them to get parts for the bus...hahahaha

...because it will turn into another VZI, i wouldnt buy off a forum from someone who posts once as it would make me feel suspicious (as there are alot of scammers around these days), but i guess well have to agree to disagree
