I know this may sound like a daft question, but where is the spare wheel meant to go in an early bay if you don`t have it on the front panel!?

i`m sure on some models, there is a recess on the back area, but not in mine - its a pretty early panel van - nov 67. i`m sure in splits there is a sort of recess behind the bulkhead?

cheers

you mean inside , under the front seats, in the middle - surely a wheel woudln`t fit in there!? would it!?

Mike

On a non walkthrough the spare wheel does indeed go under the passenger seat and yes it is big enough for a spare wheel,

i`ll have to have a look - i hadn`t even contemplated it going there!

And where would it go on a walkthrough model? mine dones seem to have a recess anywhere either.. unless its stuffed under ply line some where

On a walkthrough when you open the tailgate the spare wheel stands vertically in a recess on the left hand side. On the panel to the side of it there are meant to be two metal lugs where you can attach straps to hold the wheel in place. These usually get removed and covered with a piece of trim in camper conversions. If you open your engine bay, look up and left you can see the tub where the wheel is designed to sit.
Most camper conversions have this covered with the bed though. If you've never looked in there before you might even find some trinkets from a previous owner! (don't get excited you'll probably find sweet wrappers and maybe a spare set of points or something)

On the bulkhead models (and pick ups) the spare wheel lays flat in the recess below the passenger seat.

And mounting a wheel to the front panel is actually punishable by the death penalty.*

*ok this bit isn't true, but it should be!

sounds like the ply is over the wheel holder then.. ill just put it in the walkway between the 2 seats for now then thanks

Well your other options are a rear mounted wheel holder (from bluebird customs i think?? ) but they make access into the engine bay a bit of ball ache or the best option a nice roof rack and a decent wheel cover
