Hi Yall
Im sure someone can give me an answer, just about to put the engine and box in our van we have a 1600tp with a standard gearbox, we also have a 6 rib box,
we are going to eventually have a 1776cc built which we will be using the 6 rib
the question is can i use the 6 rib with the 1600?
will there be any drawbacks or advantages

Thanks
Vinvan

Hiya Vinvan!

My opinion only...

I reckon the 6-rib will be too tall for a standard 1600 - you'll spend 1/2 your life in 3rd gear - especially if it's a fully loaded camper. When you go bigger, consider the six-rib then. It's not much more work to swap the box at the same time!!

Just my opinion, but as you know I was 3-rib all the way until plans changed and a 2.0 type 4 came along.

Cheers, Dave

As above, the 1600 will struggle a bit with the gearing of the 6-rib.

I've a 5 speed 'box, and the 5th gear is fairly similar to 4th in a 6-rib. But 5th gear really is too tall for the steeper motorway hills with my 1600 with twin carbs. With the 5 speed box, 4th is the same as a 3-rib gearbox 4th gear, which is great as it allows me to pull up the hills at normal camper speeds. The 6 rib gearbox gears are spaced further apart and would struggle even more :)

You could go for a CK code box (1700) better cruising than the 3 rib stock 1600 box but not too tall for it, then also canny for your 1776 too!
You'll have to modify your shift linkage etc with the 091 as its longer.
I'm running a CK mated to a 2.0 and its canny good but I'll go 6 rib eventually when I find the right one

The 1700 used the same gearing as the 1600. The taller gearing came in with the 1800 engine.

Sorry but I was under the impression the CK code box diff is 5.375 and the 1600 box I removed was 5.875 :|

If the box you removed was 5.875 then it was a low ratio or "mountain" box.

Hope this helps clarify things :)
