Which leccy fuel pump?

Had a hiccup in the bus on Friday on the way to Vanwest, driving down the M5 when I seemed to loose power, felt like I ran out of fuel, the tank was low but at least a gallon or two.........pulled up on the hardshoulder and had a look round. Engine still running well ect. This happened a few hundred meters from the services so in I went and filled up. Back on the road and all was well.

The concensus is that the Brazilian fuel pumps come with a pushrod that is made of cheese and shortens in no time meaning the pump is barely moving fuel especially when you dont have the added pressure of a full tank of petrol to help. So either I find a german pushrod or go electric.

Anyone have any advise on what to use, which regulator ect? Im running 40IDF carbs on a 1776.

I had a CB rotary pump - worked fine but didn't last more than a year. Grant at Beetlelink reccomended a Huco German made pump, which do far has performed really well, nice and quiet as well - and you don't need a regulator.
Pretty sure it's this one (they do different pressures) think you need about 3.5 psi

Thanks Rob, says it need fitting out of the engine bay near the take, so pretty simple to fit too. Where did you get the blank from to cover the original pump hole?
 
I picked a fuel pump blank from a show, but pretty sure cool air etc do 'em - scat/cb performance or something like that.
I'll try and find out exactly what the model of Huco pump I've got is cos they do come in different pressures and I think they maybe push or pull ones??
Either way mines in the engine bay now, mainly cos it was a roadside repair! But I'm happy with it there - i use good quality high pressure fuel line and clips. The CB one was over the gearbox, but I replaced that with an inline filter.

I've been running a facet pump with a shiny regulator and it's been fine with a stock carb. Without the regulator it was providing too much pressure and flooded the engine. Opened the engine bay to find fuel flowing from the spindle bushes :shock:

The engine I have was originally an FI version I think so I don't have a hole for a mechanical fuel pump....
 
I'm running a hot Wolfsberg Performance 1776 with 42mm webers and it runs of the standard fuel pump and a regulator. The pressure from a standard pump is more than capable
 
Thanks guys, I don't have a problem with the standard pump it's the rod that pumps it being the problem. Trouble is all new mech pumps have ***** monkey metal rods.

Now am i right in thinking the fuel lines are 6mm i/d? If so I need a reducer ect..
 
Yeah. I used 8mm high pressure line from camberley auto factors.
I actually replaced the standard 6mm tank outlet for an 8mm one. And then just ran the whole lot in 8mm.

I don't know Just, but I've just asked a similar question of Jason this morning regarding fuel supply to my weber 40's in case that has contributed to my engine problem. I'll let you know what he says

Where did you get the 8mm tank outlet from?
 
Machine 7 do 'em :)
I needed to drill out the centre of the old nut a bigger to fit past the bend, because rather than having the elbow section in the tank, I put the straight section in the tank and used the old mesh filter.

Ide be interested to see what he thinks then. According to info I have found 3-4psi is required for the Webbers, any more and they are likely to flood

I ordered the Huco today, and a blank for the mech pump.

So im gonna need 6mm hose from the tank, a 6-8mm enlarger, 8mm hose to the pump, then 8mm hose to the carbs? or are the inlets for IDFs 6mm? Either way not a problem just working out how much hose to get............cant be arsed to shimmy down the garage to have a look :oops:

Yeah sounds right mate. My dells have 8mm fuel banjoes. I Think the webers are the same?
