I'm replacing a very tied 1600 single port with a twin port - and was just about to give VW Heritage my credit card details when my mate rang and told me a couple of horror stories.

Apparently the 2 year warranty they offer is void if you fit it yourself...!

Great - so I've a gorgeous bus sat on my drive - with no engine and sunny weather!

All tips/advice/words of support greatly appreciated...

By the way I'm in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

Heritage supply remtec engines, I had a recon remtec with 2k miles on it break the crank and had a new one sent to me, I did buy through machine7 though.

Current remtec has about 15K on it no problem, as far as I remember the warranty just say fitted by a suitably qualified person.

I know remtec were an official recon factory for VW in the past. If you do go down the remtec route I would check all the case bolts and head bolts have been torqued up correctly, the first block I got has some that were below spec.

It's fair enough I suppose about the warranty, because if you don't fit all the tinware on properly or don't set the timing right or don't seal the inlets properly etc it will quickly overheat an engine.

I think you will find good and bad stories about a lot of engine suppliers but Remtec as Noddy says seem to have the best feedback but you do pay extra for them.

Bit of a left field one here.

Two people from completely different backgrounds - one a VW bodyshop, the other a colleague at work who wants to build a hovercraft have both recommended http://www.dgmotorservices.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in Wellingborough. I wasn't even asking for a recommendation, we were just talking about VW engines. Both recommendations were in the last 6 days. Its just a bit weird hearing the same name twice in a week when I've not heard of them before and I've been in the scene about 3 years.

Alternatively - I'll fit it a new engine for you? Then at least you wont have fitted it yourself? I'm a professional automotive engineer? Bad idea.. I'd take forever and just worry about it!!

Give Alan a call at http://www.vwracing.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; he is only up the road.

If not call Rich at http://www.airspeeduk.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The best by far. New not Recon.

you beat mew to it pete

im going to be using airspeed as i know the owner and they give you a 3yr warranty on their new engines
