Hi all

Not sure which part pop this into. but looking at putting a wood heater in me workshop have made a few over the years but have always been for camping with

Advice im after is how do you get the chimney out but keeping the roof water tight..
I think the roof is asbestos tho so not sure how safe it is too..
my other option is threw the wall which is tin but this would be onto the track threw the farm and out bout two foot to get round the roof..
Not sure if the owner would be too happy bout that.. but going ask him tomorrow

Basically need to know what is the best way to get the flue out

an any pics too

cheers
Dave

If I understand you're wanting to use a covered chimney pot or chimney pot cap. Imagine shoving an umbrella out the hole in the chimney - it's going to let the smoke out but not let the rain in...

Gvee cheers for the reply its the actual getting the flue out of the buildin im after either threw the roof or the side but keeping it safe and water tight

As you have a asbestos roof you wont have to worry about the stove pipe burning it, you can buy lead flashing kits can't find a link :( but I know a chap who has one going out through his conservatory roof & thats plastic , besides it will be cheaper & warmer going through the roof, be careful when cutting the roof hole.

To cut a hole in asbestos you'd be required to use a specialist contractor.

I'd imagine they would use a standard hole saw in a drill with water to supress the dust on the outside, on the inside they would take a bag to catch any debris and dust.

All this while wearing asbestos masks with filters.

From there I'd suggest using a hot type pipe flashing - http://www.fixfast.co/rooftop-products/rp_pipe_flashings.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is what you want.

I've spoken to our H&S advisor at work and you could do this yourself. Mix PVA adhesive with water and liberally coat both the top and underside of the area you are cutting. Wear a top quality mask and paper overalls Once you made the cut use the solution to seal the exposed edges. How the unofficial bit, coat the small cut piece in the pva and bury as deep as you can in the garden or other place where it is unlikely to be disturbed. Triple bag the overalls and mask and dispose of.

PS Don't get onto the roof at any point!

There are guides on the HSE website, although sydney's advice is pretty sound!

Weve an oil burner in our workshop with a flue that goes out through the roof.

You can bag up cemented asbestos (roof asbestos) and take it to your local council tip/recycling centre

you should have watched kevins home built house on ch4 as they made a wood burner out of an old safe, loved the home made thermic lance :msn4:

I saw a bit of it as the misses was flicking threw but no chance of watching it lol

an cheers for all the replies.. not too worried bout cutting the hole now seems nice n easy with them methods.. :)

What's the best kinda flue to get? just make one out of pipe or get a proper insulated one.. would the pipe get too hot for the flashing/roof cap bit.. the bit the pipe will pass threw n melt it all?
Id like to keep the costs down so don't really fancy the twin wall stuff as i could make a chimney fairly easy.. just worried bout melting stuff

cheers for all the info so far very helpful
Dave

As long as you are using a metal/lead flashing it doesn't need to be an insulated pipe and it wil act as a radiator on the way up. There are a number of proprietary flue's available online from any of the specialist wood burning shops at reasonable cost. Usually simple spigot and socket jointing system but you need to make sure all connections don't leak gasses.

After working the building game for the last 25 years having covered many courses on asbestos and seeing people die from asbestos related illness there is no one that could pay me enough to try and cut a hole in the stuff and if you coat it on the outside and inside how does that protect you from the dust it the middle? There is a reason they shut down buildings with the stuff in it nowadays .If it was me I would always gone though the wall back also remember this could still be contaminated .It only takes one spore off the dam stuff and 20 years down the line you could be thinking it seemed like a good idea at the time back as a minimum if you are working in a garage with an asbestos roof it is worth sealing it.So at the end of the day depends how much you value your health.

Totally agree with madjack.
Don't mess with asbestos.
Seal what you've got & don't cut it. Go through the wall if you can & even then damp down any dust.
At work we pay specialists thousands to deal with this killer.
They reckon that from now on there will be a huge increase in the numbers of people becomming ill through ignorance of the past. Electricians, plumbers & builders are the main ones who were unknowingly exposed.
Sorry to sound so grim - but don't touch it.

Phil.
