My bus failed its mot the other day I knew it would just wasnt expecting it to fail on the things it did :/
Anyway a have a couple of problems that I need some advice on how to sort out for the retest

1st- she failed on the headlamps not having a beam pattern which is weird because the have genuine hella lenses.any ideas on how to figure this one out?

2nd - the front bumper step parts aren't attached, due to the cab steps being replaced and the bolt holes don't line up to the bumper step.apparently this is a common thing with can step replacement so does anybody have any tips or ideas as to how I can attach these?

And 3rd - my washer pump doesn't seem to hold air for the windscreen washers, meaning no washers, anyone kno best way to fix this?

Cheers
Matt

1st - Check lens and bulbs orientation, and that they are aiming in the right direction and are level. This can be done on a garage door or wall.

2nd - Sound like you'll need to make a bracket to bridge the gap, or, more drastic I know, weld the steps to the arches!!!

3rd - Get an electric pump

:)

As above, but don't please don't go electric (horrible whinning noise), find the leak - often the pump up valve which is just a tyre valve or split ends on the rubber pipe (cut a bit off or replace whole pipe).

I checked for leaks on my washer bottle and pipes using a bike pump, a bit of gaffer tape round a small hole on the pipe sorted the problem!

Did you fit them straight out of the box or dismantle and rotate the lens and reflector through 90 degrees?
They're set up to fit Beetles, and if you fit them as they are the beam pattern will be vertical rather than horizontal.....

I think he is refering to the MK1 Golf headlights that dont have a pattern............my mate ran these years ago and they look cool as!

I guess you will have 2 fit beetle ones as per Wig or find a more forgiving Test station?

Just

Don't those after market Golf headlights have the pattern on the reflector like modern headlights?

Good point ZedBed :)

PLEASE dont weld you bumper steps to the van steps! wrong wrong wrong. If you need to drill new holes/use wing bolts/make up special brackets...do that.....BUT DONT WELD THEM!

Air washers work fine if all components are servicable.

If you have halogen bulbs, you need to remove the bulb shrouds (if you have early headlamps) and make sure your headlights are assembled correctly for a van too.

:D

Fitted electric pump to mine, far superior, can forgive the couple of seconds of whiring from the motor to have a proper jet of water to clear a dirty screen ;) also fitted the micro switch into the og switch as per one of the KYBA issues, so very neat :msn4:

Quick fix, take the bumper off for the re test ;)

I thought it was an MOT requirement to have a bumper..?
I assume you could just take the steps off though :msn4:

Cheers for the help guys.

With regards to the headlamps, they r genuine rhd lamps that came off a bay so ther are set up right,I didn't kno that the shroud bit would have to come off tho.:/

I was thinking of doing the same thing as mentioned in kyba with the micro switch, where can I get a switch from?

And I think I'm just gonna take the bumper off for the retest.:)

The switch they used ( and me ) is from Maplins. I could prob dig out the part no. for you tomoro , if no one pops it up by then?

Mine had no front bumper and passed. Come to think of it I had no washers and it passed. Failed 1st time on split ball joint boots though.

Mine failed on the same when I'd assembled them with the reflectors upside down (1971 Euro spec).

It had also passed at more sympathetic garages with upside down reflectors and LHD lenses the previous two years... go figure. Would prefer it to continue to pass at the local garage for convenience sake though!

Ive done that conversion to the switch a few times. The switch that I have used is small with a red button and an alluminium body. Unfortunately the last time I tried to get one from Maplin they were not doing it any more (a shame as it fitted perfectly into the back of the switch body). I would be possible to do the conversion with another switch but just a bit more fiddly.

Will be able to pass fine without the bumper. Pop the windscreen out and you dont need wipers or washers either!....sorted! lol

i bought one of these off ebay having followed a thread on here to do washer switch.

Haven't done it yet tho'
