Now then. Recently fitted a new ignition switch and thought I was going alright. Got everything hooked up again, all working, what a lovely eve I was having. Then I put the steering wheel on and turned it, everything locked up. Came back after I'd had some rather nice dinner and the key ain't turning again. Did I fit the switch correctly? I asked myself. I did notice that I had to turn the key a good half turn before the red lights came on after fitting the new switch, is this a clue to the problem? Should I not have to turn it this much? I'll leave these questions for you good people to hopefully provide me with an answer. And I will love you for it.

sounds more like prb with steering lock mec or key/barrell,could tell if i could feel it.

I would guess its the steering lock causing the problem.... I had the same problem... the solution was to take it all apart then reassemble.... hey presto!! it worked fine again.

Hiya snow,

On all of the ignition barrels (887A) I have disassembled and rebuilt the cause for the key lockup has ALWAYS been the electrical portion of the ignition switch. It is the weak link of the three components.

The keyway is rock solid. The only thing I'd suggest with the keyway removed is to clean it thoroughly (I soak them in brake cleaner) and then relubricate with a lubricant that contains teflon. See Tri-Flow. The steering lock is usually a bit dirty but it cleans up nicely and functions well with the addition of some new light grease. The electrical switch usually needs to be replaced. The little dog-eared cam is what gives way. It tends to bind or lock up the keyway.
