Ok. Tinkering today and went to rev the engine and saw sparks from area of alternator. On removing fan belt and pulley. I see that the rear of the pulley has been cutting into the alternator.

Reading some stuff on net. There should be a spacer behind the inner pulley? Is this right and where do I get them?

If the spacer behind the pulley was missing, you would not be able to turn the shaft; it would be pretty much locked solid. There is much debate on this matter, but my view is most of issues like you report is due to insufficient shims in total.
