:D Years ago when our camper was our daily driver, and only worth about £500, my dad used to take me to school in it, I used to have the pi55 taken out of me constantly, "oh look at that rusty old van, its knackered," you know the stuff. From the kids whose parents could afford brand new Renault espace’s and ford Sierras (btw when was the last time you saw one of those on the road?!) As a child who knew no better, I would try and explain to them that this was our holiday vehicle, my dads van to carry stock, and had enough seats to move the family around, but soon realised there was no point.

Weirdly, the same people now think it’s the coolest thing in the world and few have their own, and are impressed that I am now driving the same van, even though they did pay through the roof for theirs. Just shows how attitudes have changed, and have no hesitation in reminding me!

Me however, I’m quite happy to still believe that it’s same £500 van :msn4: that I grew up in, and my little boy will have his own memories as he’s growing up.

How 8) 8) is that :D

I was having this debate with myself earlier in the year. I came very close to selling as we have not been getting much use since the little one came along plus it was kept outside due to no garage which I wasn't overly happy with. Now we are moving to a place with a garage, I have thought "why not just hang on to it regardless". When the little one gets a little older, we can go on trips and I would probably lose more money now than in the future if I sold...don't think I could bear selling now anyway as it does feel like part of the family

When trying to get an idea of what is going to happen, its worth looking at what happened in the past.

When my fathers generation died out I didn't see any drop in the demand or prices of cars from the 1920's 30's and 40's.

In fact they appeared to rise even faster than before and all my hopes of getting a nice 1930's vintage Lagonda tourer or a tidy low chassis Invicta, flew out the window, as prices soared into the hundreds of thousands.

That's probably why you don't see them on the road, they are valuable museum pieces.

You see it in the classifieds, baby on the way, we can't justify owning it any more. The camper is perfect for a young child, we have a three year old, I took her to outdoor pools, got her changed in the van dripping wet, lunch, water and toilet...try doing that in your car. Day trips or camping...we love it.

where i live in kentucky the humidity kills classic cars they can't sit very long or they will start to rust out without even seeing salt. everyone thinks it's the salt on the roads in the winter time but it's actually the humidity. i'm sure over there salt is a big factor coming off the ocean. i find buses and bugs in people's back yards but they won't let it go they say they are going to fix it up one day and let me remind you these people are already in there late 70's or 80's. so i doubt they will be pulling a motor out anytime soon. i guess we take the weather for granted over here the sun does come out for weeks at a time. right now it hasn't rained it like two weeks and the temps are very mild good camping weather if i had time for that. i wish people didn't watch barrett jackson. i haven't watched it in years.

Smokehouse,, it is mainly the salt and the grit on the roads over here in the winter that we use to keep the snow down and the slush and ice that we have to put up with  If that isn`t happening, it mainly rains over here most of the time, I can`t remember the last time we had two weeks without rain, it`s a small miracle if we get two days without rain  But it`s not the one off of slushy salty gritty roads and loads of rain, its the forty five years of it that`s the problem ,, its accumualative I`m afraid

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Two weeks without rain,,,,, sounds like heaven  :p

P.S. Who the f#ck is Barret Jackson ?

 is he a member of the jackson five, just asking honestly.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,p.s. Which one do you think he is mate

It's the auction that sells splits for $200k etc.

Living on the dry east coast, as opposed to the wet west, we can easily go a week or two without rain here...

The bus still rusts though due to the salt in the air from the sea.

barrett jackson is that auction house out west and two idiots started bidding on a 21 window bus and it went for 200k so now everybody thinks there bus is worth that now so that's part of the reason the prices have gone through the roof. a project 21 windows seems to go for mid 20's to 30's and you still have to buy all the metal and put it back together. when you could go buy a nice early 60's impala vert complete and finished for the same price and have more room and drive around way more comfortable.

Agreed.

I have had my bay forever but if I am honest, I enjoyed using it and going away camping in it much more when it used to be just an old bus not worth more than a thousand or two.

Weird isn't it.

When comparing our vans to the T5 I think one issue that will affect future values and practical use of T5' s in the years ahead will be the level of electronic components and whether it's cost effective for these to be reproduced after VW stop making them 10-15 years after the model has been replaced.

i think t4's and t5's are more likely to disappear as they are technically a modern van and there are hundreds of other manufacturers that offer the same thing around the time, there always going to be people who must have a vw but the original t2 split and bay offered something that wasn't really supplied by anyone else at the time, i suppose the closest competition at the time was the commer, also the achieved an iconic status to the level a T5 just never will, will a cavalier still be a must have collectable in 20 years.

Now I love an og Devon, but f****** hell, this is taking the p***. Or is it?

Looking at the wear on the ignition switch and on the steering wheel - and the new paint and new interior, I don't believe the mileage. It's been round at least once if not twice. Either that or the previous owner used a breeze block for a key fob Lol
