Hi all, 1st post here after reading a fair amount this past week since I bought a 1970 (devon I think :? ) She is not currently road worthy due to rust so I've got work to do!

We pick her up on Saturday and then it is straight to work. One thing that my brother is adament about getting is a roller to attach her too so it makes the welding and clean up of the underside easier. I've found what he means online but they are quite pricey for something that I hope to use only once (and to be honest, I believe it is money much better spent on parts for the van).

So my question to all is have any of you made one of these before? If so could you give me some dimensions or ideas on what angle etc? If you have made one, is it gatherine dust and you wouldn't mind renting it or selling on for a small fee to a new EB'r? I am based in South London if you are one of these people.

A couple of picks of what I am going on about! https://www.dropbox.com/sh/j7zsnkvxl6lw5gv/_jG6tYJgst" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks in advance!

Whis.

I think you'll struggle to make one of theses, no doubting you metal work skills!, but for the price these contraptions are they are well worth the investment if you have lots of work to do!

I bought one a few years ago when doing my resto - http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20949" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Easily saved the time by not welding underneath the van, I then sold it on once finished.

I still know the guy - I can ask him if he rents it out - that might be an option for you.

I got one second hand off ebay for £250, modified it to suit the bumper mounts, used it for 5 months and then sold it for what I paid for it. I could of asked ALOT more for it in retrospect. DEFINITELY worth the investment when needing to do anything but light work under a 'van.

Cheers
Jim

~Right, I fancy one of these to but wondering where to go to get a decent price?

Mattb, the resto looks epic, well done

Have a look on eBay type" rollover jig vw camper" you can buy it and sell it back to them

Thanks all.

Well tonight we got under and have started working out what she needs. Pretty much the bottom 6 inches all round, including outriggers/jacking points.

I am also giving serious consideration to replacing the floor as well.

I suppose, as most of it is underneath her I will probably be much better off getting hold of one. I don't fancy buying one though, as I will never use it again once all the work has been done.

So if anyone has one they want to rent then I am all ears!

If you are doing any serious work underneath you really do need one of these
I have 2 type the roll over and a rotisserie in my workshop
The roll over is great for quick jobs and the rotisserie is for full restoration projects

I built mine from 2x2 box tubing which i bent with a pipe bender. I have used it successfully on two vans now although I had to adapt it a little from early to late.

Skips a few photos but I built it originally to roll a caddy pickup, which didn't happen so I lengthened it to fit the t2.

On the late, this had a re-furbed front axle and no rear running gear so it was mounted this way

But on the early I adapted it again so mount in place of the front axle and to one of the rear hubs.

Worth it's weight in gold though,

My advice (like most here) would be to just buy and sell it when your finished with it, you won't loose out and it'll be cheaper than renting and probably cheaper than building one in the end.

Thanks Mark. Very details pictures!

I think it might be best to try and buy one. I just see it at £300 +/- that I could be spending on panels she needs.

Catch 22!

But then you will sell it easy enough once you've used it!

I googled them last night to see if they are cheaper anywhere else etc, and found this http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=6535.0 and ultimately he stated that he couldn't do with out one. Looks like I will be finding out the footprint size and if it fits in garage/on drive I'll be ordering it up!

Hopefully I will start a build/resto thread at the weekend so watch this space! :D

Hi Whistler
I found this thread the other day this is worth a read.

Whistler, there was a guy willing to rent his out ( think it was in vzi ) at very reasonable rates. Will have a look and try and dig out the details.
Cheers Ross

89Rallye - when you say "pipe bender" how big / expensive a piece of kit is this? I would like to have a go at building my own roller.

Just your run of the mill hydraulic bender,

Only photo I have.. Ive built a couple of roll cages with it (they were only for show I know, before people say you shouldnt with a pipe bender  )

in the back ground.

I sort of developed a technique for using a poxy pipe bender and be able to get perfect matching curves over and over actually where I want them, sounds like Im being smug but you have a go

Anyway I had a load of 2x2 box lying around (it was actually a set of gates for someone but they pulled out and didnt want them making) so I had a moment of madness and tried to bend a piece and low and behold.. So I bent 4 lengths and made the roller. It was originally for the caddy shown in the photos, I was going to just have two half rollers just to bolt to the hubs but when I did the van I extended it as I felt it would be more secure.

With the price of steel nowadays I certainly wouldnt want to build one again and if I did it wouldnt be with 2x2 box.

I would hire mine out if anyones that interested but youd have to be local is and be prepared to pick it up. There BIG and no fold down etc

I might be needing them in January though not sure yet.

i bought the a frame type of the guy on ebay ,he allso has advert in wolks world mag ,you can buy the brackets to fit nearly all classics or just buy the ones you need and sell it back when done.i havnt used mine yet as resto has come to a stop :( but a freind has one .once set up you can flip the bus with one finger :) .
good luck with build
