Yep, as Pete said we used them on EBI last year and they were great, especially when we took a wrong turning. Already got one for the new shop bus, but lots of other things to fit to it first (an engine & box might be a start   )

I bought a new midland one last year as a package and it was nearly cheaper than buying a used one off ebay and it came with the aerial and everything you need. I think it was about £59 but might be wrong

mines a midland with aerial 59 guid ;)

This is more popular than I first thought - gonna start searching for a CB this weekend.....

We are gonna need an EarlyBay channel....... :D

How about Lucky 7 ??

all this talk of cb's has got me thinking, my dad used to have one in his car when i was a child. My dad was also a massive hoarder and i knew there's no way he would have thrown it away. So i when to my mums and emptied her shed, result! it works and has a pa speaker, so all i've got to do now is buy an aeral and it will be cool to use it as i have fond memorys of my dad shouting at cyclist over the PA  its from 1977 got all the manuals too.

Citizens' Band (CB) Radio Licensing Update
From 8 December 2006, it will no longer be necessary to hold a Wireless Telegraphy (WT) Act licence in order to operate Citizens’ Band Radio equipment, providing that the equipment is operated in accordance with the WT (Exemption) (Amendment) Regulations 2006.

CB users share spectrum which is in a frequency band managed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). This use is secondary to that of the MOD (the primary spectrum user) and it should be noted that CB users must be prepared to accept incoming interference caused by continuing use of this spectrum by the MOD.

Please note: users must understand that CB radio equipment shall be operated on a 'non-interference, non-protected' basis; that is, it shall not cause harmful interference to, and shall not claim protection from, other radio services.

For further information please see the Related Items.

it used to be £15 a year, i got taken to court for the offence of not having a licence too the buggers.

The airways are completely deserted these days so you shouldn't get people playing music and following you about from channel to channel while trying to chat some old strumpet up and trying to get an eyeball lol

Ash,

I have one of those Mini Mag twigs that I dont use anymore. I swapped it for a Stinger which has a better range. You can have the Mini Mag for nowt if you like???
If you're going to All Types I'll bring it along. If you don't want it and if anyone else does they are welcome to it. :D

Cheers,
Chris.

Been looking at the CBs that maplins sell, but im undecided where to fit one in the cab, has anyone got and pics of their installs?

Great fun had one in my old westy and boosted up the tx and rx ( ;) ;) cough cough only in emegencies) flick it on scan and used to pick up a fair few Dubbers on the way to shows. Might have to get myself another once the bus is eventually on the road

Ash, great find with the old CB. If that is from '77, think is most likely to be an American import on AM rather than FM like all the UK spec units. Before CB was actually legal here, everyone (me included!) used AM 'rigs' but now think it is only small groups of mates who primarily go for the retro look of the unit. AM is actually illegal to use, think FM was chosen for here on the basis that there is less interference from the radios coming through on other folks TVs and the like.

Can't find the spec sheet for mine, a 'maxton' unit, but sure that depending on which country you are in, can switch to AM or FM and have 40 or 80 channels. In the UK though, the legal system which all units should be running is 27MHz FM with 40 channels. When I find the spec sheet, will post some more details. It was only a cheap thing, about £50 I think from some radio/truck accessory place near Northampton.
Am sure the first legal CBs here used to have a logo on the front, a white circle with 'FM 27/81' or similar in the middle, the '81' meaning 1981, the year they first were sanctioned for use if my memory serves.
