Will the signal still be picked up if the bus gets stuffed into a shipping container because they are much thicker than the body work on my bus....

I doubt it matey....when doing my research on which one to buy, that was one of my concerns.I asked this Q & no seller could say that their system would see through a shipping container. Those things are thick corten steel !!

hi all

company i work for uses a system called sat track on some of our machines that i can remotely imobalise the machine if needed, we asked about if machine was put in steel container or steel building and they said no it wouldnt work but as soon as it moves out then you get a signal and can track its location again. not ideal but unless they remove it whilst inside the building should work finewhen coming out of the building, also with use have found unable to activate if no phone reception in area machine is working. (so if nicked and moved to Wales ur buggered lol)
cheers Pete

Basically, the GPS will only work if it can see the sky - If you're in an under ground carpark, in a metal container, driving through a tunnel, parked in between tall buildings etc........ They won't pick up a signal. As for the GSM, if you're out of signal, the unit cannot report a position. However, the unit should (if it's any good) be able to store the data until you have GSM signal, then it'll download the stored data.

Hi, bought one of these ages ago and have just got round to fitting it. I've only connected up the + and - wires, I dont intend connecting anything else up. A couple of quick questions if you dont mind

This might be ridiculously obvious but what does the on/off button on the unit itself do? Apologies if it obviously turns everything on and off, I just wanted to check! What's the vehicle battery drain like if its kept on constantly?

In the photo below, I assume I connect up connector B to the GSM socket as opposed to GPS? And do I need to put the black strip "A" in view of the sky or can it be out of view (next to the unit itself hidden in bodywork) and it'll still work OK?

Your GPS aerial is different to mine but basically you should have 2 different aerials. One goes to each of the connection points. The on/off button stays on once you connected it upto the battery. The current draw is very small so should be ok for a few months. The unit itself has a battery back up.

The GPS aerial needs to "see" the sky. I've mounted mine directly under the central speaker in the top of the dash. Once you've fitted them both and turned it on, if you get a flashing green and a flashing red LED after a minute or 2 all is well. If not you've probably fitted them the wrong way round. Best to trial fit before fitting in the van!

Sounds like you've lost your instructions? You could probably get a replacement set by email CGMart.

I have just fitted a Skytag tracker and within 5 minutes the guy on the other end of the phone could pinpoint my bus to within a metre. And the unit is definitely not in sight of the sky, being tucked away in the roof lining, with the metal skin of the bus between it and the satellite.

A case of 'you get what you pay for' perhaps?

cheers, I found the other receiver and connected it up. I also found my instructions.
I've set everything up, initialised the device and authorised a couple of numbers, to which the device has returned an SMS to say theyre set up OK.
When I call the device, it isnt returning an SMS with the location. Any ideas what could be preventing it from doing this?

EDIT: Im using an Orange PAYG SIM. It has GPRS set up automatically on it. I contacted Orange customer services and they say that these SIMs cant be used in a GPS device, only mobile phones to access the internet.
What SIMs are you guys ising with your trackers?

I've just used a standard PAYG O2 SIM card in mine.

Did you get yours via the last group buy or via ebay? If the former the guys at CGMart are pretty helpful with tech issues.

I now have this all sorted. Was an easy fix, when I was fitting the tracker my bus was in a GPS blackspot so wasnt finding a satelite. I moved the tracker to another place and tried again - viola! Using google maps it tracked the location to within literally 2 metres. Great for the price!!

So does that mean an Orange PAYG sim is ok? Will it work continually without topping up occasionally or taking out and using in a phone?

Orange SIM works for me. I had to put the SIM in a phone first to disable voicemail and enable GPRS all the time. I then put the SIM into the device. You can also do this by calling Orange customer services and they'll do it for you.

I looked at the Orange website and it states that the SIM needs to receive/make and call/text at least once every 3 months to keep it activated. Basically, call the device once a quarter and it'll return a location SMS and you're good for another 3 months.
Hope this helps.

I've only gone and lost the user manual with all the commands. Anyone know where i can get a copy from?

If you don't have any luck, I still have mine. I'll copy the bits you need if you like.
