Can anyone tell me what the hole in the top left hand corner of the crankcase is for & should it be a hole or blanked off?

That is an oil gallery and should have a cap in it.

It would originally have had a rubber bung in it but its not vital.
The hole was for those few engines that used a magnetic sensor, which picked up pulses from the flywheel as it spun.
