camped as a lad with my parents in Dartmoor, I have fond memories of a wild pony sticking its head through the caravan door and nicking the egg off my dad's plate, as he plated our fried breakfast up

I've asked my mum and she can't remember the name of the site. (knowing my dad it was probably a farm field with an open gate) The internet is vague.

has anyone camped recently in dartmoor ? are the wild ponies still on campsites ? I wanna take my family for night, break up our drive to cornwall :D

thanks Ash

Hi Ash,
Most campsites on Dartmoor are around the edge of the moor, one that is in the middle is Brimpts Farm.

Never stayed there so I can't vouch for it ( Home is too close!!)

The Plume of Feathers at Princetown has a camping field and the advantage of a good pub and cafes , the Fox Tor cafe next door is great, you are the middle of Dartmoor and a short walk in any direction you will find wild ponies.

Wild camping is allowed on the moor but there are rules and you can't do it in a camper (you have to off the road and carparks count as roadway). The park wardens do patrol the carparks at night, I was caught a couple of years ago!!

Hope this helps,
Cheers Rob

cheers Rob, the plume of feathers looks good! I'll do a bit of reading up. It's just a night stop to break the journey up for the kids on route to Portreath :D
