cut cut cut! The questions is do you want to do something for yourself or for the next person down the line. I want my pleasure now...

i was talking about resale value, alot of people that want a resto wouldnt give as much for a cut dash.

i would definetly not cut the dash even just to preserve value when you come to sell.

Not an issue because I can't see me ever selling it.

if you dont want your radio can i have first dibs if its not working?

Maybe. What's the value on these things? If it's not working, should I try to fix it or am I better off leaving it alone. At one point I worked in the electronics industry testing and repairing microprocessor controlled burgular alarm circuit board so I should be able to fix it. The question is: is a duff radio with original bits more desirable to those who like this kind of thing that one that works but has had a few components replaced in order to make it do so?

Leave the stereo in as it looks nice (and period) Cool
Place a pod either on or under the dash to hold the gauges etc.
Then use a seperate amp for the iPod and mount this in the ashtray.

I like the idea of doing something with the ashtray. I guess I could remove it and put a panel there for a cig lighter socket without cutting anything.

I can't really see the gauges looking good in a pod underneath - kinda like they were put there because there was nowhere else for them. Anybody got pictures?

On top in individual cases could look good with neat wiring but probably makes a bit more of a feature of them than I wanted to.

This is obviously a keeper, do whatever looks the best to you, theres lots of good examples even in the gallery on here.

Regard the radio, i bought a fully working '65 VW factory emden 6v/12v, with UHF on fleabay for £40, and that was a bargain.

Good radios can get £60 all day long a non worker? probably knocking 10-20 off of that but it atleast gives an idea.....

If it is broke, should I attempt to fix it or would potential buyers prefer that I left it alone?

depends on what you mean by fix it.

If your replacing components then probably best to stick to the genuine artical still available though hard to source and potentially very costly, there are plenty of companies that will refurb it but at a price....

or cobble together a modern inner retaining the shell and mechanics...

First you need to ascertain what the prob is?
Power
amp
receiver
drive/tuning twine

hard to figure out on here

personally I would offer it out as state unknown and just describe/photo the general appearance and the fact it makes a good period accessory..

Cheers Araon. Chances are that it's an age thing that cleaning and freshening up dodgy looking solder joints will fix. If not then I'll leave it alone.

Mostly likely you have a few dry joints or blown caps and dust causes tracks too....

Dip it into warm mildly soapy water rinse and hang to dry or hairdrier it....can work wonders also allows you to inspect solder joints etc....

I may be too late as i have seen a few ask but even if radio dont work i woud have it just to fill hole im my dash in my Panel van 8)
PM me if still avilable

I got a delivery today which included oil temp and pressure gauges and senders, voltmeter, 80mm tacho, and cig lighter.

The tacho will go in to the right of the speedo but that may be temporary. I have a time clock in there at the moment but it doesn't work too well. If I can fix it I'll probably put it back and use the tacho in my bug instead.

My favourite for the others at the moment is to have the three 52mm gauges in a row of holes cut under the radio, and the cig lighter mounted on a panel in place of the ashtray. I'm still not sure though and am in no big hurry to fit them. I'm still looking around for ideas.

I've got the guages in the dash under the radio slot. They are in a reasonable enough position to be easily scanned while I am belting along. If they were mounted under the dash I don't think I would ever notice them. As for cutting the dash, I'm a believer in doing what you want to do to your bus as people have been doing since they were first put on the road.
I've also got a double lighter socket setup inside the glovebox, It works discreetly to power my ipod and the bizzo that transmits to my 1970s Pioneer stereo, which is well out of date for the thieving set.
There isn't much of a problem with Pikeys down here it is more your unemployed euro backpackers that one needs to be wary of!

I've just got my dash back from the painters. I put my gauges under the radio slot, (which I had raised higher up the dash). Haven't fitted it yet though. 8) :D

Now that I like, especially the move the radio up a bit to make better spacing.

Wanna sell it?

Well I just saw a radio similar to mine sell on eBay for 100 quid with no promise that it's working:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140160693557

I guess that means that I won't be giving mine away free.

Interestingly the eBay auctions mentions a DIN socket on the back and suggests that with an appropriate cable, this could be connected to an iPod. There's a similar socket on the back of mine so if I can get it working...

Just remember the audio will be rough through the din...

Also 100 is quite a lot and usually 80 tops for these....
